Previews in tiling managers

Over this past 1.5 years of using Arch, I've always used gnome because I like how there are previews for pictures and also custom icons (ex. selecting an image from a folder and using that pic as the folder icon). That's a feature that i really like because i find it useful to organize my files.

Recently I've been looking at tiling mangers, particularly xmonad and awesome but i'm leaning towards xmonad because i read awesome requires the config file to be reconfigured everytime there's an update. So my question is:

If i'm using xmonad on it's own, will my picture files have previews or would i have to use xmonad with gnome in order to achieve that feature? Thanks.

Re: Previews in tiling managers

It depends on what file manager you would use, because both awesome and xmonad are not Desktop Environments, but Window Managers.

Re: Previews in tiling managers

No, you are not wrong. But together with window manager these people use a file manager, e.g pcmanfm, thunar, nautilus, dolphin etc.
Before I tried awesome few weeks ago, I've used KDE, and I missed its integration features in plain awesome.
Now I'm using KDE -plasma -kwin -nepomuk +awesome as WM, and I like it very much. I've got a full stack of tightly integrated applications and lightweight desktop at the same time.
So, answering your question, it depends on FM of your choise. AFAIK nautilus and PCManFM support previews.

Re: Previews in tiling managers

Beautiful explanation fluffylime.
I use wmii with pcmanfm and I recommend it. pcmanfm shows thumbnails and it has very little dependencies.

Re: Previews in tiling managers

Thanks for both of your suggestions.

I might stick with nautilus because i think that's the only one that refreshes on its own whenever a new file is placed into a folder, something that i would rather have than not.

pcmanfm and thunar both refresh automatically using gamin (recommended) or fam.

Dolphin also refreshes on its own.

Re: Previews in tiling managers

So this would mean if i want the simplest setup, all i need is to install thunar and then xmonad? From there i can just use terminal to download programs that i want, such as firefox, vlc, etc... and to launch those programs i can use xmobar (something like that). What if i want to have an active desktop where i can create new folders or place files onto, would i have to install a DE such as gnome or xfce?

I'm not sure about Tunar but usually the file manager can take care of the desktop.
pcmanfm can take care of the desktop for you for example.

Re: Previews in tiling managers

If you want a desktop with icons and folders, you can use nautilus (don't know about thunar). It provides a desktop, when you start it. But use it carefully, when I launch it in awesome, it ruins all the beauty of this WM until the end of session.
Also you can try awesome-freedesktop, though I've not tested it.
