VMware Workstation 7 (Archlinux host, Win7 guest) -- hard crash

I'm getting frequent hard crashes when I run VMware Workstation 7, with Archlinux as host and Windows 7 as guest. I don't know what has changed other than my keeping up with Linux kernel releases.

This is a hard, hard crash. Screen goes blank, everything dies. Arch has been recovering itself nicely thanks to ext4's journaling capabilities, and the Windows 7 guest OS is generally intact when I relaunch it. Still, this is a huge hassle, since I lose everything that I'm doing -- and my temper, too -- every time it happens.

Is anybody else getting this?

No logs that I can find seem to have any helpful info.

I haven't yet posted on the VMware forums, since I can generally get more expert help right here.

Could this crashing be related to sharing files between the guest and host systems? That's something that I've enabled lately.

I'm having a similar issue.

It sounds like you are able to actually get into Window 7 and work before it crashes, for me, I have about 2 seconds after I click "start" before the entire system freezes. hard reset/reboot.

Re: VMware Workstation 7 (Archlinux host, Win7 guest) -- hard crash

I have just had the same problem. When i pressed "run" on my Windows 7 virtual machine, my entire host went down. Either X froze, or the computer restarted.

I solved it by:

1. Performing a full system update
2. Reinstall the VMware kernel drivers (as root):

mv /usr/lib/vmware/modules/binary /usr/lib/vmware/modules/binary.old
vmware-modconfig --console --install-all

I hope this helps.

Re: VMware Workstation 7 (Archlinux host, Win7 guest) -- hard crash

Nicklas,

Thanks for the reply. After I posted, I did some more reading and figured the modules were the issue. Before I got the modules recompiled, I realized there was an update for VMware (7.0.1) so I just installed it and that also took care of the modules.

All is working now. Thank you very much for your assistance.

EDIT: your code snippet will be helpful next time I do a kernel update. Thanks again.

Re: VMware Workstation 7 (Archlinux host, Win7 guest) -- hard crash

nicklas: Thank you for your suggestion. I had tried uninstalling and re-installing VMware, but I hadn't thought of re-compiling the modules. Meanwhile, like johnr, I've installed 7.0.1 and it seems to be working O.K. so far. I haven't used it extensively yet, though.

Edit: Although this problem may be solved, I think I'll wait just a little while before tagging this thread as solved, in case (1) the problem reappears or (2) somebody else has something to offer. (I imagine threads marked solved probably get fewer views.)

Do you have a working PKGBUILD for it, or have you installed in manually?

I installed using the stock installer that you can download directly from vmware.
