Scroll Lock

Hey, here's one of those 'I can't believe I never asked this before now its almost embarrassing to ask it' questions.

What the hell is the Scroll Lock key for? I've never used it... it must have a purpose though, eh?

I used to use the pause/break key to interrupt programs under DOS, I think... or maybe i was VB... and the Print Screen key... I used to use that before Gimp Acquire-->Screenshot, but it doesn't work in Linux. Or I never tried it, can't say which. I never use any of these three anymore

What are these keys for... both traditionally and nowadays. I'm thinknig I could map them to a media player or something or other just so they aren't wasted.

I think the Scroll Lock key is to stop text scrolling on the screen (i.e. to see output of program). I've never used them.

I think scroll lock was made to "halt" terminal output... to keep it from scrolling... not sure... let me google it...
and print screen I actually map to import (imagemagick) so it's still functional

it does halt terminal output on the console, I just tried it.

coooooooooool.

its not as user-friendly as 'more' though.

I see.... it doesn't work for me because I don't have a scroll lock light. I think I'll remap those keys someday. Just have to decide what to do with them. I don't use the function keys enough either.

i think the only place i ever saw "scroll lock" actually used was in LOTUS 1-2-3 (back in the old dos days) - cant remember though what exactly was its functionality - maybe selecting "page scroll" vs "line scroll"... dunno... bad, bad, bad memory cells... :shock:

First time I felt I need Scroll Lock button on my keyboard is rebuilding "of the world" in FreeBSD on VDS through VNC. I got a lot of mistakes of resolving deps & if_else in code, I felt I must scroll up to read what exactly wrong. In Local Arch scroll in terminal is turned by default.
