[SOLVED]Network printing - pls hlp a bit...tnx

Hi,

Some info about the setup here
- LAN
- print server DLink 301p+ - set to 192.168.1.254/255.255.255.0
- cups installed
- ran the wizard, setting to "socket://192.168.1.254" also tried to add port 9100
- choose the printer (HP 520)
- CUPS said "printer sucessfully added"
- tried a testpage
- CUPS said "success"
- printer said ... nothing
- printserver can be pinged and reached to via the web interface
- the printer icon (on the web interface of the print server) does have a little cross over it...
- no error messages
- tried IPP as well - no luck

Please help a blind guy see the light...

Thanks!

Thor

Re: [SOLVED]Network printing - pls hlp a bit...tnx

I installed CUPS on the system where it is supposed to print from, I cannot reach the web interface, what recommended web server do I uinstall? I experimented on a redundant system first, where it did not work...

Tnx

Thor

Have you read the wiki?
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cups
The network interface is at http://localhost:631/, but you have to have the cups daemon running. You are using the corresponding hplip driver, right?

Hi schen,

Thanks for this pointer, as batman and robin would scream: "off to the wiki!!", As I understand, I do not need to install a web server...
Ok, I'll read the wiki first, then come with either a cry of victory and a big thanks, or...more questions.

Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED]Network printing - pls hlp a bit...tnx

Ok,

The story so far: I got CUPS up and running, selected the make HP, and the model Deskjet 520 foomatic - did a test page and ... nothing, however, this is what was in the error log

E [03/Oct/2010:19:35:22 +0200] [CGI] Unable to create avahi client: Resource temporarily unavailable
E [03/Oct/2010:19:35:22 +0200] [cups-deviced] PID 2472 (dnssd) stopped with status 1!
E [03/Oct/2010:19:35:30 +0200] [cups-driverd] Bad driver information file "/usr/share/cups/model/foomatic-db-ppds/Kyocera/ReadMe.htm"!
E [03/Oct/2010:19:35:41 +0200] [cups-driverd] Bad driver information file "/usr/share/cups/model/foomatic-db-ppds/Kyocera/ReadMe.htm"!
E [03/Oct/2010:19:35:56 +0200] [cups-driverd] Bad driver information file "/usr/share/cups/model/foomatic-db-ppds/Kyocera/ReadMe.htm"!

HP/Kyocera???

Anyone seen this oopsee??? What do I do?

EDIT - I installed CUPS and avahi, had the daemons up and running (I read the info up in the wiki) When I modify the printer, avahi (?) discovers the networked printer/server - a testpage does not happen, I still get a weird error

[04/Oct/2010:18:14:18 +0200] [cups-driverd] Bad driver information file "/usr/share/cups/model/foomatic-db-ppds/Kyocera/ReadMe.htm"!

that keeps baffling me, I tried a driver of a deskjet 500, but still...the same.
What is happening here???
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT : I just installed Gutenprint (ok, I forgot, sorry) and get (again) annother error

W [04/Oct/2010:21:10:16 +0200] Bad resolution "FromPrintoutMode" for printer HP520.
W [04/Oct/2010:21:10:16 +0200] Bad resolution "xdpi" for printer HP520.

Anything I CAN do?

(kinda feeling lost and burned out - sorry)

Re: [SOLVED]Network printing - pls hlp a bit...tnx

Hi,

At the risk of bumping my own thread - and getting tapped on the head, here is a possible sollution:

- I used an old box, P3/320Mb/10Gb/Lan
- installed Arch - of course - without graphical desktop
- installed CURL
- instaled Apache and CUPS
- added these to the daemons section of /etc/rc.conf to have an auto-exec at (re)boot
- configured Apache using this input : http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Apache
- configured CUPS with what I found here : http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Apache
- installed Lynx - a text based browser, recommended for use on a server where Xorg and C° dont exist (and should not exist)
- hooked up the printer
- installed the printer on the server using the web interface, using Lynx, make sure everything is set as needed, share the printer too, of course
- test page & reboot
- on to the client
- on each client that needs to print, do the following
- unstall CUPS, get it running, add it to the daemons section of rc.conf too, of course
- add a printer using the (graphical) browser - stick to the same settings used on the server (driver and so on)
- test page
- add a printer in the local applet - this may seem strange, but I guess that the link CUPS/OS has to be made this way...
- I used ipp://[IPaddress] and did a find (EDIT : there are two boxes, in the top one ONLY enter the IP address, in the lower one you add the name of the printer as configured on the server, THEN verify)
- the applet should come back with the installed printer on that IP address, do a verify, everything should be OK
- annother test page if need be
- open an application, the OpenOffice Writer, for example, open a text (I used a text with a photo in it) and try to print
- you should see the printer as you configured it in the applet, not the web interface
- there should be a ... printout

It took me a couple of hours, reading the manuals on the wiki (thank you to the maintainers for very complete manuals) and sniffing around on some other places.

I took this time so that some where some other users could benefit...

The Dlink print server...is  - in Linux - about as usefull as a belgian government, that is: useless...oh well.

Thanks!

Thor
Oh and, by the way : if there are errors/left-outs and so, lemme know, I'll correct the text
