Wireless adapters

Hi, I have an old laptop on which I would like to install Arch and start using again. It doesn't have its own wireless card so I will need to buy a USB wireless adapter. I've heard that wireless adapters can be difficult to get working due to driver issues, and as they tend to be quite steep price-wise I dont want to spend a load of money on one to find out that I can't get it working.

I was wondering how true it is that wireless adapters tend to be a pain to get working, and if so, are there any brands or models that are particularly handy to set up?

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1000, unfortunately I can't remember anything else about the hardware right now. Are there any more particular details that one would need to answer the above question?

Thanks!
