How to use jack connection kit?

Im trying to get my external soundcard working.

first of i start ffado-mixer. it recognize my soundcard and everything. I then type sudo jackd -d firewire in the terminal and get this output :

JACK compiled with System V SHM support.
loading driver ..
libffado 2.0.1 built Oct 24 2010 22:46:48

and the soundcard now respond when i click the buttons on it. but when i try to play anythong in VLC i dont get any sound at all. i have choosen jack as output in settings.

what am i doing wrong?

You've not connected VLC to the appropriate outputs. VLC doesn't automatically choose its connections. qjackctl is normally used for managing these connections.
