Anyone Know of a Good Linux-Friendly UPS

I'm looking for a UPS for my Arch64 server. All I want is a UPS which, in the event of a power outage, will simply send the server a shutdown signal and keep it powered until it is completely turned off (after 5-10 seconds or so), and then of course allow the wall power to flow through again when it's there again. I'm looking at this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6842102048

The specifications page says "USB Connectivity - HID compliant USB port enables full integration with built-in power management and auto shutdown features of Windows, Linux and Mac OS X." Just wondering... has anyone here ever used a UPS like this? Would I have to search for drivers for a feature like that or would it work out of the box? I'm also open to suggestions if anyone has a UPS they like. Thanks!

I use APC for my FreeBSD server and I use the apcupsd to control it and monitor it.
The UPS I (can't remember the model) only has a battery which lasts about 30 minutes which is long enough to shutdown my server in the event of an outage (which is quite common in my area )

Awesome; I'll grab an APC UPS and use apcupsd! Another question - I'm using a 750 Watt power supply on my server. Does that mean my UPS needs to supply more than 750 Watts? What would happen if I tried a 300 Watt UPS - would the battery just drain faster? Thanks.

Your power supply will only use 750 watts if the actual devices it's driving require that much electricity. I don't know off the top of my head any typical numbers for desktop machines, but you could measure it if you have a multimeter (preferably the clamp-on type) or look up the power consumption of each of your components. 300 watts is a bit low, and if your machine requires more than that you will probably end up undervolting it, which might cause permanent damage. Do your homework first, and err on the side of too much power. A cheaper UPS won't save you money if it means you have to replace your high-dollar video card.

Looks like you have decided on an APC UPS with apcupsd as suggested by sand_man. I have to agree it's a good way to go. I have two small APC units at home and have never had a problem with them.

Thanks for all the information! Using Newegg's power supply calculator, my system needs about 500 Watts so I'll be sure to get a UPS which can supply that. mikesd: yep, sounds like APC is the way to go.

Just another +1 for APC... I've been using them for years at work (3000va 2RU rack mounts) and home (650va stand-alones) and they've all worked flawlessy with apcupsd

So I bought the APC BR1500LCD UPS (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6842101067) and have installed apcupsd on the server. It all works great, except for one thing. After power is restored to the UPS, the server (which is plugged into the UPS) does not automatically reboot. I have "Full-On" set for my "AC Back Function" in BIOS and if I simply unplug the computer from the APC and then replug it back in it automatically reboots just fine. Does anyone have any ideas?
