Some advices for a wannabe developer? and other stuff

Hi there, I'm Alan and I'm from Mexico...

I am new with Arch Linux, I just installed it the last Saturday... The last distro I used was Fedora then I got Arch on my machine and I would like to learn C++ so maybe you could help me with that suggesting me some tools and etc etc..

Another thing, could you also suggest me some alternatives to gnome terminal, gedit, eye of gnome?? I searched but I didn't find anything or I'm just too lazy to do more research...

Thanks big_smile  and sorry for the English..

You're definately too lazy, and I don't know why I am helping you, but...

gnome terminal -> urxvt
gedit -> leafpad or vim
eog -> mirage, feh etc

You may also check this topic to find some nice and light apps LnF Awards 2010

Hey Alan,

well, for C++ you could look at sites like http://www.cprogramming.com/begin.html
or search google for that.

g++ (from gcc) is a compiler for c++, I don't know what else you'd need to get started with that.

rxvt-unicode is a nice and seemingly popular alternative to gnome-terminal, vi and emacs are good alternatives for gedit if you like advanced text editors, or geany, eclipse or perhaps even netbeans if you like full-blown IDEs (although supposedly geany is fairly lightweight). feh is a good image viewer that I use, which seems very lightweight, but doesn't have much of a UI.

I hope this helps smile

My best advise is to learn to use google.   It is a great help when figuring out programming errors.

Hi Alanzz, please use google for such simple questions as you've asked. Firstly, you can search for the term 'help vampire'. Being 'too lazy' for anything doesn't bode well for any future as a developer.
