I have xscreensaver in my /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and after running startx and booting into gnome, when i run xscreensaver-demo, i get an error dialog saying that the xscreencase deamon was started by 'nobody' and therefore we are not writing to the same config file.
Transcription of the dialog:
xscreensaver-demo is running as user "root" on host "kevin-laptop".
But the xscreensaver managing display ":0.0"
is running as user "nobody" on host "kevin-laptop".
Since they are different users, they won't be reading/writing
the same ~/.xscreensaver file, so xscreensaver-demo isn't
going to work right.
You should either re-run xscreensaver-demo as "nobody", or re-run
xscreensaver as "root".
Restart the xscreensaver daemon now?
[Cancel][Ok]
Currently xscreensaver is started from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc which is called by startx which is called from my /etc/profile.
So, my question is, how do you start xscreensaver as the logged in user?

'nobody' may be the name of the daemon.

Ok, but how do I fix this. If I don't I can't use custom settings.

xscreensaver-demo is running as user "root"
Is the problem happening if you run it as a regular user?
