Ok this is probably a bit of a newbie question, I'm thinking of switching from my cruddy Radeon HD 4350 to a Nvidia Geforce 9800 gt (Old, I know but I'm cheap ) I know i'll have to uninstall the old drivers and install the nvidia ones but I'm not sure if I'll need to manually configure X.Org this time (I didn't last time but IDK if its different when you switch GPUS).

Boot into text mode so if 'startx' won't work, you can try to configure things.

Like I said, I'm a newbie so uh how do I boot into text mode?

Disable your login manager or you can switch to a virtual console with Ctrl+ALT+F1. You can usually switch back to X with Ctrl+ALT+F7 if it is working. The good news is that X does not need a config file nowadays so you can just remove the ATI driver and install the nvidia one.

We have a special subforum for newbies... Either way, you're expected to do a minimal effort and document yourself.

I prefer to just boot in text mode anyway then run startx. It's no big deal to do and I think it's a great idea for newbies so they don't become helpless when X crashes.

Agreed. Treat booting into runlevel 3 as default. Good practice for so many reasons.
