HDMI audio with ALSA only works when HDMI cable is connected at boot

Hi All,
I have a HDA-intel ( 82801H (ICH8 Family)) sound card and the HDMI audio will only work if the HDMI cable is connected when the laptop is booted. The HDMI output seems to be detected regardless, as it is visible in aplay -l whether or not it is working. Any help of advice on how to approach the problem would be appreciated.

I think there's a handshake done between the two devices at either end of the HDMI cable when ALSA's started up.

ALSA can see you have an HDMI output regardless of whether there's a lead plugged into it, however *I think* you'll only get sound on HDMI once/if the handshake between the devices (PC and TV?) is done and it looks like that's done at boot time not run time.
