Does xf86-video-ati provide the gallium3d driver?

I've been seeing for a while now that the gallium3d ati driver is performing better than the classic mesa one. Yet, I've never been sure what driver I'm using, nor have I found out how to check it. I have installed xf86-video-ati and have a working hardware accelerated desktop, but perhaps I'm still using the classic version.

Can anyone clear my head on this one?

Re: Does xf86-video-ati provide the gallium3d driver?

AFAIK, the latest packages from extra xf86-video-ati (6.13.2-2) and ati-dri 7.10-1 from testing should include gallium 3d support for ati radeon R300-R500 cards (if your unsure, lspci -v will tell you which ati card you have, and which kernel module you are using).
From reading through a tutorial on the gentoo site and the latest phoronix article on the gallium and ati, it appears you will need kernel 2.6.37 as well. haven't tested any of this myself yet because I need stability on my production machine, and if you are unsure about the risks associated with using bleeding edge software, at least know the methods to boot into a console and downgrade your video packages!

edit --
The guys in this forum know way more about this stuff than I do, probably a good idea to read through the last dozen pages or so to see what works and what doesn't

Thank cubeist. Guess it wasn't as easy as I thought initially, so more fun for me big_smile.
