Blank tty consoles when starting X11 (after upgrade)

After upgrading my system, the virtual consoles has stopped to "work" when I start the X server. I can switch between tty1-6 and back to tty7 using Ctrl+Alt+Fn1-7. But the 1-6 consoles are blank. The screen is black and there is no reaction when I try to type a command like ls -al or whatsoever in them.
It happened after upgrading my system to the version which contains kernel 2.6.31. I have later tried to update to kernel 2.6.32 by enabling the test repository and do a regular upgrade (pacman -Syu). But the upgrade didn't solve the problem. Does anyone know the workaround to get back the tty's? Any help will be highly appriciated.

I fixed my black screen problem by installing the intel video card driver. Was attempting to use vesa.

Check your /etc/inittab whether it contains one or more lines like this one:

c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty1 linux

Speed-up Boot article (section 1.5) on Arch wiki describes disabling the terminals you see when you press Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F2 ...

Re: Blank tty consoles when starting X11 (after upgrade)

Ah I just had the same problem and just resolved it. basically the tty was working fine until I started x. When I switched to to any of the tty1-6 it would only have a black screen with a cursor.

it seems I had used a "generic" video driver when I installed it and reinstalled with the correct driver.
