hi guys! i'm wondering which of these login managers is the lighter, which the best functioning...
what's your choice?
i'm running lxde but installed slim. it's very good imo, just i couldn't get the restart / shut down button on the screen.
i never tried lxdm.
i'm trying qingy now. it works, and it ought to be faster, ugly as it is, but i didn't notice
besides, i'm experiencing a issue with bit color depth of the login screen. it runs 640x480 16 colors. as i'm using kms i can't set the framebuffer in grub2. so? =/
i think i'll give cdm a try, too.. if you say it works good
EDIT: cdm isn't working.
would it be possible to start the window manager automatically after the console login? without a login manager i mean, just running .xinitrc

of course. Please search wiki for xinitrc. Then add a small if clause to your ~/.bash_profile which says that if you log in on tty1, then it should startx for you and you are good to go.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

thank you Inxsible. i just did that a minute ago, awesome!! who needs a login manager?
well, the problem now is when i logout from the lxde session using the lxsession-logout program, it won't log me out the console =/
i just posted in the lxde forum hoping they can help me, but i suspect that that program isn't customizable. maybe i should run another or make my own

Change the "startx" command to "startx && exit" in your ~/.bash_profile. This should log you out from the console too when you log out from LXDE.
