hello guys i was wondering if there is a way to set the cursor size/shape in terminals by editing the .bashrc file. i am using openbox with lilyterm and lilyterm does not have the l-beam option like Konsole from KDE has. anyone of you know if its possible to set the l-beam cursor system wide.
thanx alot

Nope. Cursor is controlled by the actual terminal, not the shell.

I don't know if it can be changed only for the terminal application, but the I-beam cursor is part of the X cursor theme you are using. It's also used for editing text, like in this firefox textbox in which I'm typing this message.
I assume KDE provides some intuitive and easy way to change the cursor theme, but I believe that with openbox you have to edit ~/.Xdefaults
That's what I did. Try adding to that file:
Xcursor.theme: redglass
Xcursor.size: 44
And see if you like that. You might also be able to use the KDE cursor theme you used before, by using its name instead of redglass.

Ahh, this raises the question, which cursor is this about, the text cursor or the mouse cursor? If the former, see Anikom15's post. If the latter, see theapodan's post.

i am not talking about the mouse cursor but the terminal cursor. in this image you can see the rectangle cursor i was talking about. there is the full green color one. the empty one like in the image and the l-beam style http://greeennotebook.com/wp-content/up … rminal.jpg

No, lilyterm obviously has no option to set the cursor shape. It uses the vte terminal widget, but the source code simply contains no calls to vte's set_cursor_shape() function at all. So as it is now, lilyterm does not care about cursor shapes.
Why don't you just request a feature to set the cursor shape? This is open source, after all. Vte supports block, rectangle and ibeam shapes, all lilyterm would need to do is to set them according to user preference. It should be quite trivial to implement.

Or use a terminal that already supports the I-beam.

gnome-terminal for sure
terminal (xfce), terminator, xterm, rxvt, etc can probably be easily configured for it, but I'm not sure.

In roxterm you can set it to be an underline, block, or l-beam. Right click in the terminal for preferences.
