Hi Arch Gurus!
I was wondering how to download my photos with USB.
If I plug in the USD, dmesg says:
usb 1-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
If I turn on my Nikon nothing happens, but my Olympus E-330 mounted automatically earlier.
Thanks Guys!

Some cameras can be setup as usb-storage devices. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that your Olympus was set up to be a storage device, and you probably had an automounter that recognized it as a storage device and mounted it.
Is there a setting on your Nikon that sets it as a usb-storage device?
Another thing that might be helpful to keep in mind, is that by setting it up manually, you can control where it mounts so it's convenient for you.
From what you posted, it seems as though it's being seen, so then all you would need to do is to mount that device somewhere in your filesystem.

...unless it's a PTP-only device, in which case you need gphoto2 and one (or more) of its frontends.
It seems you didn't check the wiki first - there are various relevant pages.

I checked every menu in my nikon but I didn't find the option Knute suggested, so I've installed gphoto2/digiKam.
Everything works fine now.
Thanks o lot!

Sadly Nikon "forgot" to include mass storage support on their newer (low end) models.

Best accessory for digital cameras: a USB card reader, cuts out all that crap.
