[SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

Hi all.

I'm having lately problem with my PC-speaker. I could solve one problem by recreating my user (seems I messed up some conf. files). But now, after I solved it, i wanted to install compiz on my system, and noticed again a problem with my PC-speaker.

When I start compiz my system bell changes to PC speaker.

-While not running compiz the system bell is the gnome's theme one.
-I use fusion-icon
-Sound (videos, etc) still works perfectly (tested it on youtube)
-My soundcard is an Intel-HDA (It's a HP laptop)

¿Any suggestions?

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

because you have a laptop (which use non standard audio codec) you should specify the audio codec in modprobe, follow our wiki:

If you have a "Beep" item in alsamixer, try muting it.

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

Using a thinkapd T61. I have the pcspkr module blacklisted in rc.conf, and it is muted in alsamixer.

I am having the exact same issue (it started a few days ago).

if I open firefox for example, and try to search for something that isn't on the page, my machine will emit a very loud beep.  Also, whenever I reboot the machine makes a much louder beep.

If I disable compiz on login with gconftool-2 --set -t string /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager metacity

and then login again, the first beep issue (in firefox) goes away; but the beep on system restart persists.

EDIT:
I disabled the compiz system bell option in ccsm/general and the first beep problem went away.  The reboot issue persists but is possibly unrelated.

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

force to don't load pc-speaker module, just follow our wiki :

I tried it, but didnt work. Btw, the pc-spker is usefull for me, because I sometimes mess everything up and up in front of a shell with no X, then it's usefull to have it (kinda oldschool)

I disabled the compiz system bell option in ccsm/general and the first beep problem went away.

Ok. I did it and it killed the beep. But now theres absolutely no bell. Is't there a way to have a bell (no pcspkr, I mean the gnome's theme one, or any toher soundfile)

The reboot issue persists but is possibly unrelated.

I thinjk it's unrelated, it's the problem I had last week too. My solution for the reboot beep was simple:
- Try login in gnome (I supose) as root. And see if you have a beep in the terminal when pressing tab to show all available options. If there's no beep, and there's no beep also when rebooting, the you have the same problem I had. My solution was to move my user folder to user.old, delete my user and recreate it. Finally copy all your DATA (not hidden conf files) back and delete the rest.

It's the only way I could solve it.

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

Before I posted, I deleted my user account and moved everything but my . (hidden) files back.
The reboot problem persisted.

I also created a new user (different user name, no relation to my current user) and it still happens.

Also, if I kill gdm and login through tty (ctrl+f1, etc) it still makes the loud "beep" on reboot.

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

And you don't hear any beep while using the console? Like when pressing tab or deleting?

Because what you tell seem's different to the problem I had. Try blocking the pc-speaker module in /etc/rc.conf. Some post above is a link to the wiki site

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

As I previously mentioned, I've already disabled that module from loading.

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

Solution: Go to Compiz Config Settings manager->General->Audible Bell = no

I hope this helps big_smile

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

We both already did that.

Attached is a screenshot of alsamixer. Notice that the entry called "Speaker" has not been muted, if I do that then my entire audio interface gets muted (no sounds or music) and that I've muted my "beep" entry.

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

Yeah, but there is an option on CCSM(compiz config settings manager) that makes the audible bell to sound, even if you have it muted on alsa mixer. Im telling this to you because i was having the same problem.

Edit: I didn't read your edit above saying that you already did this sorry... About the reboot problem, i has the same anoying problem, i have a laptop and i solved it doing this:

-On rc.conf

   MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
   #MOD_BLACKLIST=() #deprecated
   MODULES=(!snd_pcsp !pcspkr)

-Doing that thing on Compiz

-And muting the beep on alsa mixer, not just lowering the volume, MUTING it

That solved the problem for me

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

Ok.
So before I posted, I had done those things!

For starters, I have no snd_pcspkr (or snd-pcspkr).  I have had pcspkr blacklisted in rc.conf for some time.
I have never had beep unmuted (see screen).
A few days ago, I turned that compiz audible bell off, and yes, I had no more beep EXCEPT for on reboot/shutdown.

This is perhaps a different problem then the OP's original issue... so if anyone wants me to end it here and start a new thread, let me know. For now, I"ll try and find a solution.

Re: [SOLVED] Compiz-fusion causes pc-speaker to play the system bell

I figured it out!

I had to mute the "digital beep" channel in alsamixer (see screenshot above).

Thanks for your patience.
