security check

hello, long time ago I used a tool to check my system for vulnerability. It checks the filesystem and ports and makes report. Now I cannot remember the name of it. I googled much with no luck. Does anybody use such software and if yes, can you recommend one. I guess the spring causes the increase of paranoya in my case smile...

Re: security check

Hey,

Cool reflex, to want to keep the system clean, and...paranoia is a good thing.
lol
As a virus scanner, I went with fprot
http://www.f-prot.com/download/home_use … linux.html
Though, you may want to read this article too:
http://www.brunolinux.com/07-Security/A … ed_it.html
(just for fun)
Install chkrootkit, it's in the repo, run it every once in a while...
What does it do? Scan for rootkits, here's more info on rootkits:
http://www.usenix.org/publications/logi … tkits.html
Install paccheck, to check validity of the mirror, just in case someone tampered with them in a nasty way - unlikely but hey...
Every so once in a while, run netstat, just to see what's what, and who/what is on your connection...
And, as a last one, there is zenmap. Enter 127.0.0.1 (the loopback) to do a scan, and read the report. Install nmap, the gui _should_ be in the menu after that...but, nmap can live without it too...
And, above all, get to know and trust Linux. I came from the windows swamp, and I know what an attack looks like, paranoia is not a symptom with that thing, but an item in the survival kit... wink

Oh and, fsck does a file system check, but you only need that in case there's a fire...
