Somehow my xdg-open got screwed up, and everything tries to open with soffice (libreoffice), including from chromium, and event the places menu under Gnome. How can I reset it to all the defaults?

Did you try searching for information before posting here? What's your defaults.list?

I dont think it is using this file though. I tried renaming it, and still uses soffice. I logged onto another account, it asked me what to use to open a file, i chose evince, and now it uses evince for everything.
EDIT: I don't think it is even using XDG-Open. I removed it from /usr/bin, and still the same thing.
EDIT EDIT: It is using gnome-open

I had the same problem. I got so fed up with it that I ended up switching to xfce and using exo-open to open things for me. Sorry this isn't much help, but I thought I'd let you know that other people have experienced this problem as well.
Maybe you could force xdg-open it to use a different back end to gnome-open. xdg-open is just a bash script after all.

what are some possible backends?
EDIT: Turns out I already have exo-open installed, but it is also using LibreOffice. ARGHHH!!!
Where are all the conf files, so I can "hard reset" them?
