[SOLVED] Question about gnome 3

Hey,

when gnome 3 comes out of [testing] and into [extra] will I be able to keep gnome 2 without it trying to update to gnome 3 every time I run a system update?

Re: [SOLVED] Question about gnome 3

I think you can use IgnorePkg in pacman.conf but it's risky business.

Re: [SOLVED] Question about gnome 3

Have you searched the forums? This has been discussed many times.

Gnome3 will replace Gnome2. You can use an external repo which provides gnome2 and blacklist gnome3, but eventually there will be some dependency that will require gnome3 and you will have no option but to change over. If you want to stay with Gnome2, maybe a rolling release distro is not for you. Linux Mint and Debian are ones that still provide Gnome2. So does Slackware (not by default though, I think). Slackware is very similar to Arch. I installed it in Vbox a few days ago and I am loving it.

Re: [SOLVED] Question about gnome 3

@Dans564 is a major bummer to get rid of gnome without even trying gnome 3 for couples of days.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: [SOLVED] Question about gnome 3

i have used gnome 3.  In fact I used it for about 5 days full time, just downgraded to gnome 2 a couple of days ago.  I like arch because of the immense amount of customization that is possible.  Gnome 3 robs the user of a lot of options, options that a rely on.  Gnome 3, I believe, goes against "the arch way".  Of course the beauty of arch is that I have the easy choice just not to use it, but still.  This is just my opinion.

But now this thread is going slightly off topic and I am sorry for that.  I just have strong feelings about the direction that Gnome in going in.

Re: [SOLVED] Question about gnome 3

I think Gnome 3 will have an app similiar to ubuntu tweak as wells as still have the gconf editor for customization... Could be mistaken though. I haven't really been following gnome 3 that much even though i should because i run gnome wink

I might be thinking of other distros but i was under the impression that gnome 3 will have an option to choose a gnome classic session at the login screen. If this isn't the case it's not a bad idea, but I'm not sure if you could get gnome-panels to work in gnome 3...

With that said. I haven't even tested gnome 3 so i'll refrain from judgement until i play with it for a while. If there isn't a gnome classic option I have a feeling I'll probably be switching to XFCE. The one thing I loved about gnome was it's simple, easy to use desktop.

Desktop: Fedora 21 Mate + Compiz [x86_64] on 2 TiB HDD  /  Windows 7 Professional [x86_64] on 500 GiB HDD
Laptop: Arch Linux + Openbox [i686] 120 GiB SSD on Acer c720 Chromebook
