I have installed getmail and followed the gmail backup wiki from arch

the mails are stored in the folder ~/bak/mail/new

one sample file name in the folder is

Re: getmail

up to you, you can read them raw with vim or emacs (don't worry, quite readable)
or you can use proper clients like thunderbird and mutt

Re: getmail

This is maildir format. AFAIK Thunderbird cannot read the maildir folder directly, although it should be able to show individual messages (via File >> Open >> Saved message, then switch to "all files" type). You may install and setup an IMAP server to make the archive accessible to Thunderbird and almost every modern mail client.

Mutt can access maildirs directly, just use

mutt -Rf ~/bak/mail/

(R is for readonly -- it's archive after all..), but it is a text-mode program. One of most powerful mail clients in existence, BTW, but text-mode is appaling to many...

Evolution and kmail are graphical mailers capable of accessing maildirs directly (or so I've heard), but I do not use any of them, so I cannot give a valuable advice.
