For some reason, after I install any wm (openbox, awesome, dwm), the shutdown process doesn't show.
Is this normal?
Is there a way to get a back?
I am running everything in Virtualbox if that changes things.

What shows in it's place?
Try switching to a text terminal ctrl-alt-f1, and then issue the shutdown command. See if the shutdown displays normally now.

I just see the
Arch login:
and it almost looks frozen, but it shuts down normally.
What does the ctrl-alt-f1 do? It kicks me out of the wm and takes me to the terminal with stuff that ran before the wm came up, but I can't input anything. I can type, but theres no # or $ and nothing happens. I also tried ctrl-alt-f2-7. What are those? It took me to seperate login screens while ctrl-alt-f7 took me back to the wm.
I don't have a login manager yet, so if I exit the wm first then log off, I can see the shutdown process. I'm on dwm.

ctrl-alt-fn changes virtual consoles (ttys)
ctrl-alt-f1 shows tty1
if x is on tty7, then ctrl-alt-f7 switches to that
shutdown stuff should display on tty1

Well oddly, the shutdown process is shown in tty7, but the screen displays tty1. How do I change this?

I am using dwm too with slim. What essentially happens is that during shutdown, tty1 comes into focus, and the shutdown messages are displayed there.
So, as i said earlier, open tty1 (ctrl+alt+f1), login there (there should be a login prompt). Issue the shutdown command,
halt
or
sudo halt
Now see, if the messages are displayed on tty1.
EDIT: Searched the forums a bit, and found out that using the inittab method solves this for people who are using a display manager. I too am using a display manager with the inittab method, so that's probably why i am not facing this issue.
How are you logging into the wm? startx?
Take a look here for info on inittab:

yeah I've just been typing startx after login.
I probably need to read up more about the virtual consoles as such. Thanks for the help!
