I'm running up-to-date arch and nouveau as video driver for old nvidia mx440 card, the lcd is 17 inch and X starts with 1024x768 when I try to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nouveau.conf by changing this line
Modes "1280x1024"
into this Modes "1280x1024_75.00" Probably not the right way to ask for 75 hz from nouveau.
I should mention I 'm considering this because though in my monitor guide 60 Hz is the optimal refresh, I get this watery shaking of image in the background when I try to drag the front active window by the title bar. I dont' know what causes this also had it on windows xp and solution was to up the refresh rate contrary to what the manual said.
If there is a solution to this I appreciate your help, thank you

do I run it as root or user, sorry to ask.
I did it as normal user and it worked one more question do I have to add the command to .xinitrc or elsewhere?

tried it didn't work
"xrandr -r 75" works but I don't know where to put it to make it persistent,
it's ok if I add it in ~/.xinitrc?
I have X starting automatically at boot

I think It depends on your desktop environment, if any.
Or else, use .xinitrc

ok , I've put it in .xinitrc I don't have DE just openbox , I'll see how it works , but I am left with the regret of not knowing why is it so hard to have a nice 60Hz refresh rate, nevermind. SOLVED
