MPD: ERROR: problems opening audio device

Since a day, maybe a little more, mpd is troubling me. When I use mpc, I get the error

ERROR: problems opening audio device

This is my mpd.conf

I'm not sure whether the name is correct, I have those lines in comment. I'd first try to comment out all those lines and see if it works by default.

I've used that and the alsa output that follows it and neither work at the moment. Also note that with everything commented out, mpd doesn't start up anymore.

So I guess you start mpd by starting the daemon script in /etc/rc.d, right? What's the output if you start mpd the usual way by mpd<Enter>?

I have mine set to plug:plugequal as I use an equalizer with alsa, but when I set it to default it works fine, try that.

i'm using per user config, and i did :

 killall mpd 

and edited my mpd.conf and commented all thing on audio_output and let mpd detect my audio output.
and it works again.

@arthd: You haven't indicated if you have pulseaudio on the system (with Gnome 3). If you do, you need to change audio_output type from "alsa" to "pulseaudio" for mpd to work properly. I did this successfully both on Arch and Ubuntu.
