GNOME3 fallback mode Gallium 0.4 on softpipe Radeon HD 4670

Hi smile

My GNOME3 is still in fallback mode. xf86-video-ati does not work properly. Do you have any ideas?

glxinfo | grep renderer
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on softpipe

I am in the video group and mesa, mesa-demos and xf86-video-ati are installed.

But before upgrading to GNOME3 catalyst was installed. I uninstalled it with pacman -Rdd.

That tells us you have a problem with direct rendering, so the driver falls back to software rendering.

that suggests there's a problem with kernel modesetting.

Check Arch wiki on ATI , especially the KMS sections.


Booting with apg Openrc, NOT systemd.
Automounting : not needed, i prefer pmount
Aur helpers : makepkg + my own local repo === rarely need them

If I change KMS GNOME3 does not start. I only can see the wallpaper.

Now I've installed acpid and the (WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory) has gone.


After running

export LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib32/xorg/modules/dri:/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri

it says

glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes

That's strange, isn't it?

Just follow the steps for installing catalyst on the Wiki site in the opposite direction wink maybe there are still catalyst daemons in /etc/rc.conf or initscripts or...
