Diable Gnome Brightness Control and Leave it to Hardware

I have an Intel Series 4 chipset and the graphics can become a serious problem when adjusting them inside of gnome. The FPS dramatically slows down and the whole computer lags. Is it possible to disable Gnome 3's control of the brightness (including that applet that shows up when you change brightness) and leave the brightness control to the hardware?

Thanks in advance.

i got that far, and i disabled backlight there, but it's still slow when I manually change it and the backlight overlay thing still comes up when I change it which makes me  believe gnome is still managing it.
