Is it normal for the core temp of one of my two cores to stay at 104deg and the other around 100? Is that a safe temp to work at? I'm using macfanctld and it sounds like the fans are full throttle, but maybe I did something wrong. I checked the fan max rpm and the file said 5700. Shouldn't it be 6000? I tried changing it but I get access denied even as root. Any ideas?

Is it temp F or temp C? :-)
If Celsius, it's too high. It would be nice to know what kind of processor it is, how exactly did you try to change the fan's rpm etc.

EDIT: it is Celcius
Already have frequency scaling using laptop-mode-toolls. Also went into applesmc.768 and found fan1_max or something of the sort which contained a single entry as a number. I did the following:
sudo su
vim fan1_max
changed the value to 6000
then :wq

Any ideas.
Just tried encoding some videos and the same thing is happening. Has anyone found a good solution for fan control on a macbookpro (5,2)?

I had a computer that was getting very hot like yours and it was the heat sink was not seated properly, so maybe hardware -> heatsink or blocked cooling fins/fan.

My google searches seems to second this opinion: they're always asking about heatsinks, thermal paste, dust and grease etc.

is there no way to increase the max fan speed? 5700 rpm seems too low.
I compiled macfanctld myself -- changing the formulas to increase in speed earlier and moremore rapidly than default. I just found a debian post floating around saying that their fan{1,2}_max was also 5700. Would if be unsafe to increase speed even if it were possible?
UPDATE: I just installed trayfreq so I can adjust the processor to a lower speed for heavy loads which is an annoying workaround for now. Would your guys suggest opening my mbp up as my next line of action or should I persist in trying to find a way to increase the fan speed?
I've been running at 2.4 GHz @ 100% for a while now as opposed to it's 2.8 GHz standard capacity and is at a more comfortable 80deg C
