KDE 4.7 Plasma Desktop Crash

Hi everyone! There have been several mentions of issues with KDE 4.7 relating to wallpapers and the like but I'd like to draw your attention to the random crashes of the Plasma desktop every 4-5 hours of usage. Ist anyone experiencing something similar? Any workarounds?

Re: KDE 4.7 Plasma Desktop Crash

It crashes on logging off here which makes it hard to send a bug report.
KDE 4.7 has several regressions so far mainly in plasma and kdelibs. I've reported a few so far.

No problem here.

Check your .xession-errors from a tty, it may contain useful debug information

Re: KDE 4.7 Plasma Desktop Crash

Not experiencing this problem here too, have you tried with a clean test account or after backing up and temporarily removing the .kde4 folder in your home?

Re: KDE 4.7 Plasma Desktop Crash

plasma-desktop crashes on login here after upgrading to 4.7

Odd thing is that starting it again from a terminal will sometimes (very rarely) start fine and not crash, then it's stable for the whole session.

Will try on a new account and/or submit a bug report later when I have some free time.

In case it helps here's what plasma-desktop throws when started from a terminal:

Re: KDE 4.7 Plasma Desktop Crash

I'm getting crashes on my laptop (not my desktop though) when I right click on the desktop > select Desktop Settings.  I get a signal 11 seg fault in kdeinit4.

I'm going to test a fresh account and see if that recreates the crash.  I also start kde using startx and .xinitrc with ck-launch-session added to the line.

Update:

I just created a fresh user with the same .xinitrc line and the error is recreated upon clicking on Desktop Settings.  My desktop .kde4 folder hasn't been wiped since 4.5 I believe, yet it doesn't suffer from this bug.  My laptop was on a fresh installation from a few months ago, starting with 4.6 I believe.

That's right, i see these crashes (when logging-off) too. But not everytime. It crashes for example when launch some application and log off just after it. Maybe some memory-based-failure. Not sure about these things.

Sorry about my sucking english.

Re: KDE 4.7 Plasma Desktop Crash

This seems to be caused by this bug:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278222

I solved the problem for me by patching kdeplasma-addons-containments with the patch from that bug:

# sudo abs
# cp -R /var/abs/extra/kde-plasma-addons ~
# cd ~/kde-plasma-addons
# makepkg -o
# cd src/kdeplasma-addons-4.7.0
# patch -p1 < [path-to-patch]
# cd ../..
To make the build significantly faster, modify the PKGBUILD file so that line 99 reads "make containments" instead of just "make".
# makepkg -sre --pkg kdeplasma-addons-containments
# sudo pacman -U kdeplasma-addons-containments-4.7.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

Hope this works for you guys too smile

Re: KDE 4.7 Plasma Desktop Crash

I didn't try that patch but I think what fixed it for me was opening ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc and removing the clock applet. Not sure what was the problem with it but plasma-desktop no longer crashes now.
