extending ext4 root fs and unextending ext4 home fs without unmounting
I was wondering if I could do this because I would like to update my laptop but I won't be home for at least a week to do it from a livecd

Do you have a USB flashdrive? Will your laptop boot from a USB flashdrive?
If yes to both, then you can put either GParted Live or SystemRescueCD on the flashdrive and resize your partitions from there.
