System freezes

Hey!

I installed my Arch setup a few months ago, and every 2 or 3 days it locks up. Something more than once a day.

As far as I can tell, nothing is logged. And I'm usually listening to music, and when it locks up the last sample gets "stuck" on the speakers.

How can I narrow this down?

My specs:

- quad core intel i7 960@3.20Ghz
- 8 GB RAM
- Gnome3
- ATI Radeon HD 5750 Series
- ASUSTek P6X58D-E motherboard

I'm using testing on pacman.

Re: System freezes

Are you listening to music using flashplayer? Is just the music stuck or the whole system?

Re: System freezes

The whole system freezes (no response, no image change, sounds keeps playing the last sample in a loop).

It happens when I stream audio with flash players, or when using SqueezeSlave (terminal app).

Re: System freezes

While I don't have a solution to this, I also find that my entire system freezes up when streaming over flash player. If need be, I can post up my system information when I get home (I'm procrastinating at work right now. Shh! Don't tell my boss!).

Re: System freezes

But is there a way to find what is causing this? Like, run a kernel debugger or something?

Re: System freezes

Are you happening to be using 64bit bit flashplugin? If so, it is a known issue. Complain to adobe support and use the 32bit one in the mean time.

Re: System freezes

Well, disabling Flash worked - no more hard freezes. And being Flash-free makes me feel giddy smile

However, I still have a nagging problem. If I leave my workstation up for a few days, it will sometimes become unresponsive to mouse commands! I use Gnome 3, and moving the mouse to the top left corner no longer shows all windows, and clicking on things yields no effect. I used Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to a text VT, logged in as root, killed X (which respawns it) but GDM comes up and it's still unresponsive :S so, the only solution is to restart, but at least I get a clean unmount for it.

Anyone familiar with this?

Thanks for any replies!

Re: System freezes

I have a similar issue. Except for the fact that the mouse pointer stays responsive, the sound keeps playing, and I can switch to virtual terminals.
I'm on 64-bit arch, GNOME 3 environment, using 32-bit flash with nspluginwrapper.
To be honest, I haven't yet experienced any problems with flash itself, but my desktop rather freezes when I scroll PDF pages too fast, for instance. And once or twice it happend while scrolling pages in Firefox.
My logs are quite uninformative on this matter, though.

Here's the same kind of problem I have:

I hope we can make something of all this...
