Did you log out and log back in? The code that actually runs is in
/etc/profile.d/jre.sh

Did you install jre and jdk? The Oracle version is available through AUR, otherwise openjdk you can get from the repos.

Thanks. Logging in and out again fixed this.

Hi, I've also installed the jdk and jre (7-3) from AUR using yaourt, and have loggedout and restarted, but java and javac don't seem to be working. The newly created menu entry for Java VisualVM fails to load. Any ideas?

Do you use chromium ? if so go to http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp and see if it works?
When my installation was giving trouble ie before i restarted when i visited that page Java worked but the java vm app did not.

Hi, yes, that page does seem to work in chromium. When I try to call java or javac from the command line, the commands are not recognised though, so I don't think the install has worked properly. Any idea how I can make this work at all?

I've just worked out from research that my issue is related to lightdm - it seems to have destroyed all my paths. Running without itfor now whilst I work out what the problem is, but otherwise, I can assume that the JDK and JRE packages from AUR are in fact working fine for me.

In the FWIW department\, I had problems with jre 7 and instead use version 6, release 27.
