Is there a GUI app that checks for updates? I would like to install Arch on somebody else's system, but I feel that using terminal commands might be a bit much for them.

Refer to Why would I not want to use Arch? and Pacman GUI Frontends from the wiki.

So is PackageKit reliable?

Please do your own research. Use the app and figure out if its reliable enough for you and your usage.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

One of the best, and most user friendly, gui tools I have seen is YAPAN.
It is in AUR; and I would strongly recommend it.

If using terminal commands is too much from them, you might consider installing a different distro. Updating often requires merging .pacnew files, if they just blindly update all the time their arch system might crash after a while.

What shwick and several others say above. It's rarely a good idea to install Arch for someone else. Users are expected to take responsibility for their own systems. See The Arch Way.
