[SOLVED] HP CUPS Printer Help

OK. I have searched thsi topic relentlessly and have tried many solutions, but I still cannoy get my HP Photosmart C4280 printer to work.

I have all of the HP and CUPS software installed.  When I start the hp tool box, it recognizes that there is a printer attached to my system. I start the set up process, choose the ppd file and I get the error:

Printer queue setup failed. Could not connect to CUPS Server
Is user added to "sys" group(s)

I added my user name to the sys group but still received this error.

If I try to set it up through cups, my browser opens and says

The requested operation could not be completed
Connection to Server Refused

Details of the Request:
URL: http://localhost:631/admin
Protocol: http
Date and Time: Saturday, September 17, 2011 10:13 AM
Additional Information: localhost: Connection refused
Description:
The server localhost refused to allow this computer to make a connection.

I must CUPS configured wrong somehow.

Re: [SOLVED] HP CUPS Printer Help

Hm, I don't know if it helps but I see 2 issues possible:

1) you have a physical problem with the printer (for example bad USB cable)
2) you haven't added a daemon to /etc/rc.conf. If this is the case, add cupsd into rc.conf.

Pls inform us how it goes...

Re: [SOLVED] HP CUPS Printer Help

The printer works when I boot into another operating system.  In fact the scanner works in arch.

I have this in my /etc/rc.conf file: DAEMONS=(dbus !network !dhcdbd !networkmanager syslog-ng @alsa @wicd cupsd)

Don't fix it if it ain't broken.

Re: [SOLVED] HP CUPS Printer Help

Did you log out and log in again since adding your user to sys?

Re: [SOLVED] HP CUPS Printer Help

First things first:
Can you at least connect to the main Cups administration browser page at "http://localhost:631"?
Are your passwords properly set up for the connection (you need root for administration rights)?

To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

Re: [SOLVED] HP CUPS Printer Help

Right now gdm is just hanging and I can't boot into arch at all. When I try to connect that way I get the following from the browser:

URL: http://localhost:631/admin
Protocol: http
Date and Time: Saturday, September 17, 2011 10:13 AM
Additional Information: localhost: Connection refused
Description:
The server localhost refused to allow this computer to make a connection

Re: [SOLVED] HP CUPS Printer Help

When the HP utility tried to connect to  http://localhost:631/admin it would pull up epiphany and that browser would not load the page. When I cut and pasted  http://localhost:631/admin into chrome, it let me set up the printer.  Now if I can gdm to work again. Oh well.

Hey thanks for everyone's help. I am no computer genius, just a 46 yr old guy who likes to experiment with linux.
