From my view this is not a nice idea because than we will split the work and i don't see the resources for doing this.

Yeah, my intention isn't to develop my own set of PKGBUILDs. TeXLive is already going to be confusing enough without have two version of it floating around. All I'm trying to do is pass on suggestions and bug info to aid firmicus in the development of his set of packages in the hopes that Arch gets a set of texlive packages that is acceptable to the arch devs.

Note that there is no difference between the DVD iso and the CD iso for our purposes (the cd cannot be run live, it is for installation only, and it has binaries for three architectures only). So again, there is no need to download and loopmount an iso file!

Yes, I did notice this; but I'm looking at it from the point of view of being forced to use wget in this scenario. Rsyncing is relatively efficient to use as a download method as you can enable compression over a transfer; and it obviously avoids redownloading the same files. SVN/CVS/Git have all the downloading advantages associated with versioning. Having to use a DVD image sitting on a plain webserver is going to force the use of ftp or wget which are undesirable as transfer methods (due to redundant downloading and uncompressed transfers).

These points are all somewhat moot though as it does turn out that these issues I believe can be remedied. Basically, I decided to scope out the tug.org rsync server a bit with

rsync -an tug.org::

and found the rsync depository I was looking for. If you rsync against against tug.org::texlive-Contents as opposed to tug.org::tldevsrc, you get the last stable TeXLive distro release (the 2/12 build that correlates to the DVD iso). You can generate xetex.patch by executing

svn diff svn://tug.org/texlive/tags/texlive-2007.0/Build/source svn://tug.org/texlive/branches/branch2007/Build/source > xetex.patch

texlive-2007.0 corresponds to the DVD release of TeXLive. Firmicus could also use this to generate the .paths for the dvd I believe.

Fine, this is exactly what we need.

Re: replace TeTex package by TeX Live

@PDExperiment626 and all others

Guess what: it  took me 30 minutes to modify all PKGBUILDs and regenerate all *.paths files following PDExperiment626's surprising revelation that the content of the live DVD is actually accessible via rsync. So we do have a fixed target now AND we don't need to redo everything.

You can have a look at the whole stuff: http://ankabut.net/archlinux/texlive-stable.zip

You'll notice that very little has changed in the scripts!

It is late and I have only tested one non-core package, so no guarantee that nothing will break :-) But if one of you is up for it, have fun smile

Re: replace TeTex package by TeX Live

@Firmicus

The packages look really good; the only thing I've noticed so far is that the source.tar.gz still pulls from tldevsrc. I'm not sure if this is intentional. Anyway, I decided to use the source.tar.gz from texlive-Contents and with a correspondingly modified xetex patch. All the packages compiled just fine. There were a few packages that spit out a map error when they were installed; but this didn't seem to cause any issues overall (I just ran updmap-sys --syncwithtrees just to make sure there was no issues).

One of the upshots from using this new source is that I no longer have the put export MALLOC_CHECK_=0 in /etc/profile to get pdflatex to work smile

Anyway, excellent job on the packages. I really like how this installation works; it's very bandwidth/size efficient and is able to be easily patched to the current SVN build. I think arch now has a better texlive installation solution than most other distros out there. big_smile

I think we should make a decision where the way should go and i hope nobody here see this as criticism. At first i want to explain something about me: I test not only the making of the packages. For every test  i delete all (so i even start at zero which means i sync every again),  pacman -Rd texlive-*, makepkg && pacman -S texlive-core and texlive-latexextra, makepkg && pacman -S ALL_other_packages and start kile to test the latex system (which is a function in the menu) plus running latex/pdflatex on one single file. The last updated zipfile from Firmicus should be okay and pass the tests which i describe.

Okay, now we have another zipfile which results from the stable release of texlive. But could it be that it is more a frozen release because i see a lot of patches in the specfile from fedora and PDExperiment626 even run this xetex patch? So we should ask ourself what do we want and what be the differences between texlive-devel and textlive-stable. That the need of MALLOC_CHECK_=0 is not in the stable is nice (instead of that i can't understand that a older version don't have the problem and the newer one have it but this is my problem smile ). But what is up with newer versions of at example komascript or the security patch for pdftex ... have the devel server this files included or not?

Again, i don't want to critize anybody, i accept every common decision and i will test with the same engagement as before. So now my suggestion: If devel have updated versions of styles or something else than we should take this because from my view it works. The other advantage is that we can use incremental  updates. For the technical part of that is it instable or not i must say that i don't know so much about the basics behind texlive and i will trust everything what Firmicus and PDExperiment626 say about it.

My motivation for suggesting to have a decision is that everybody here of us have now working updated tex system but no one else. So let put us a working release in the community repository to give other this possibility too. After this we can discuss about the fine tuning.:)

Well I was convinced this was the same file! We should check the md5sum to be certain though. But if it is on the texlive-Contents repo then it should be rsync'ed from there. Can you specify how you generated the patch?

PDExperiment626 wrote:

This error was expected, as I did not update the list of mapfiles in the install scripts yet. There are additional ones  in the svn version, which of course could not be found by updmap. I have now changed that. The mapfiles in install scripts should be in sync with the trees. I will update texlive-stable.zip in the next few minutes.

PDExperiment626 wrote:

Well, this contradicts my statement above... Again, can you md5sum both source.tar.bz2 ?

That's a nice compliment. Thanks!

Perhaps I should rename texlive-stable.zip to texlive.zip and texlive-stable.zip to texlive-svn.zip? On the other hand I think the svn version now builds without a glitch (thanks to a few fixes provided by Attila yesterday night!) and should continue to do so for the next few weeks (assuming the TL svn repo does not undergo major changes).

I personally will continue to use the more recent (svn) packages, as I rely on newly updated packages for my work. Once the stable packages have been finalized (mapfiles etc), I shall update the wiki to point to the existence of both versions.

I have also been thinking that it might be a good idea to split texlive-core into two packages, one for binaries/libraries and the texmf tree, and another one for the core texmf-dist tree. This way it would be possible to fix or update the texmf-dist tree without having to recompile all binaries. But I'm not sure how I should name them. Perhaps texlive-core and texlive-core-dist? But that is slightly misleading. What about texlive-hardcore and texlive-softcore ? ..... I'm joking of course big_smile

Perhaps the one without binaries should be simply called texlive-core, with a dependency on texlive-bin ?
texlive-bin would of course contain more than just binaries, but that's ok.

Re: replace TeTex package by TeX Live

Hi all,

I just received my new laptop (finally) so I will be able to help too with this! It's a Core 2 Duo (centrino duo) so I'll help with the x86_64 testing.

I wanted to add something to the conversation. I see at many places that checking out a svn tree would be troublesome because of the always new development. What I could suggest is checking out a certain revision, instead of the last one (HEAD). That way, anybody who try to build the package would get the same tree, witch would be easier for the support. What do you think? Something like :

svn co -r [revision #] [svn tree]

Re: replace TeTex package by TeX Live

@PDExperiment626: Your FLAGS:
I think you use the same gcc as mine and so it is enough to use only "-march=pentium-m" without mtune. Gcc has a new option "-march=native" which works good here for me with an core2duo. My FLAGS looks so if i want to optimize it only for my pc (my second one have an athlon xp so i have to put a "-mtune=generic" in if the package is for both):

CFLAGS="-march=native-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="-march=native-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

It is realy nice because than gcc do the job to find out what it needs.

Eh, I have to nag you a bit here (so don't be offended!), but didn't you read my previous post on precisely that point? ;-)
See http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 30#p270230 in which I wrote the following:

myself wrote:

In the above patch I have manually changed four lines to account for a problem with 64bit architecture (it was said to be only for SPARC64, but ezzetabi encountered the same issue on his machine -- see earlier discussion in this forum): see http://tug.org/pipermail/tex-live/2007-June/014100.html for the origin of the changes.

And these are precisely those you noted. With long instead of integer ezzetabi was not able to compile on his 64bit machine. These modifications were posted on the TL mailing list (ref above), but for some reason did not make it in the svn repo. I should perhaps remind the developer about it...

For arch32 users it does not make a difference.

Concerning the CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS, see Attila's post above. For the community packages these settings should be as generic as possible.

Note also that I have followed Attila's advice and added options=('!makeflags') in the PKGBUILD for texlive-core.

Question: since we are obviously producing the very same binaries for both texlive-svn and texlive-stable, why is it that MALLOC_CHECK_=0 is necessary in the first case, and not in the latter? I am puzzled about this...

@ezzetabi: brain0, who is a dev, has offered us on this forum to put the packages in community, and I asked him two weeks ago to have a look at the PKGBUILDs. I assume he is busy at the moment, or perhaps enjoying a well-deserved holiday. If I don't hear from him relatively soon I will ask on the TUR mailing list. The fast approach of course would be that I apply to become a TU myself ;-)
