I'm online all day and I'm a sucker for authority positions. 8)
you do realize that the majority of moderator duties are more administrative than authority?
flame wars are merely monitored and if they do get out of hand they are locked (i did it on occasion ..maybe three times) the rest of the time it wa smaking sure topics were in the right place, double posts were removed, etc. more and more this forum is requiring people to "clean up" such things.
many people seem to be digging up old threads and tacking questions on or asking questions within questions in some of the longer threads. in the case of the latter they should be split and uin the case of the former the threads should be split then locked.
and so forth. moderators should NOT have the authority to ban members or punish in any other way than to lock threads. in most cases only words of warning should be necessary to calm flame wars.

That's pretty much what I figured. I think I'll tone down the sarcasm a bit lest I be misunderstood

I would like to give back to the arch community. I love to administrate forums, and i'm pretty good at it too, . I could even write a new template for the site and lay down some mods to decrease bandwidth usage, and increase usability. Failing that I can do moderator work as well.

I started on a new template that was supposed to mimic the home page, but haven't gotten very far yet. I found it annoyingly tedious work, but I still intend to do it. However, I'd be glad to pass the job off if you want to work on it.
If you make a template, send it to me to test and I'll see what Judd will do about adminning. I'm not sure about installing mods yet though.
As for reviving old threads, you know what they say... revival of the fittest.

to be compatible with the frontpage is not really the main target --- i would like to see the colors unify (take the ones from the main page to the phpBB) and remove pics or optimize them to be smaller (in size)

It is for me.

colours done, worked on pics a bit. I might give over adjusting the layout, too much trouble for my lazy/busy schedule.

ok, great - understand you fully, with the schedule - mine is also a little overfilled :-)
