Re: 64 bit Java plug-in is working with AUR packages!

I had OpenJDK/icedtea6 from the archfr repository working fine on my 64-bit box, but then I had some KDE problems. After changing from KDEbase to full KDE, I've been unable to get java applets run in BonEcho. I've reinstalled OpenJDK, reinstalled Xulrunner and Mozplugger, but no go. BonEcho lists the OpenJDK plugin and the plugin file, gcjwebplugin.so, sits nicely in its place: /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/gcjwebplugin.so

When testing Java at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

I get: "Start: applet not initialized"

I see an empty .gcjwebplugin file in /home/user...

Any suggestions?

The Sun test site isn't working for me right now, and when it did it was the slowest initialization of any Java applet that I've seen with IcedTea. What about this site?

I'm not trying to be a smart ass here, but does any plug-in work on 64 bit Opera?

Re: 64 bit Java plug-in is working with AUR packages!

First of all, thanks a lot to skottish for opening this thread. I'm glad to see that this package is of use for some of you. I Just wanted to thank bapt for having released the first version of the PKGBUILD under the name icedtea, and kite for the awesome work he's done on the openjdk package, along with the advice he provided me. Really, this package is a true community work big_smile

As openjdk6 has recently been updated and as the classpath team releases a new icedtea version about once in a month, we can expect a new version really soon smile

Re: 64 bit Java plug-in is working with AUR packages!

I have a question about this. IcedTea identifies itself in a strange way that prevents it from working properly in some cases. For instance, Frostwire can't use it by default. Also, more than one Java test sites from Sun either don't work or perform really badly. Considering that this basically is Sun's Java, that doesn't make much sense.

Re: 64 bit Java plug-in is working with AUR packages!

what's weird is that it used to work... at least it did the first time I tried icedtea mozilla plugin!

also, many sites think I don't have java installed (notably impots.gouv.fr to declare income)

lloeki, you're a developer. Do you think it because sites are testing the string output? For instance, Icedtea6 says:

Icedtea6 wrote:

[skottish@iasE ~]$ java -version
openjdk version "1.6.0-internal"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0-internal-b09)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.6.0-b09, mixed mode)

--EDIT--

By the way, everyone, if you haven't voted for this package yet, please do so. It's the best Java 6 has ever been for 64 bit end users.

Re: 64 bit Java plug-in is working with AUR packages!

skottish,

regarding sun java test page, it worked, and properly reported 1.6.0-internal, with the moving guy. I even made myself some remark that the guy was moving with less flicker than with sun jre. then it stopped working but I did do many things in between so I can't trace it back. now the applet appears, thus java is being called, but it stays as a grey box.

as for the string testing, sometimes yes, sometimes no. many times it seems like the sun java test: the applet seems to lock up.

Re: 64 bit Java plug-in is working with AUR packages!

Hi everyone , its my first post here....so far i've managed to configure Arch by reading and learning from the forums/wiki but now im stuck.

Im using Arch64 and BonEcho browser ,all I want to do is to get the java plugin enabled. JDK and JRE are installed

[pete@desk ~]$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_05"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_05-b13)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 10.0-b19, mixed mode)

Bon Echo / about:plugins does'nt list any java plugins

.....and ive downloaded icedtea6 from the FR repo's but im not sure what my next step is ,any pointers would be most appreciated.:D

Re: 64 bit Java plug-in is working with AUR packages!

tiberius, you don't download icedtea from arch repo, you add archlinuxfr repo to the end of your /etc/pacman.conf, then do 'pacman -S icedtea6'. icedtea6 actually replaces sun jre/jdk, which doesn't have a 64 bit plugin.

Sorry i wasnt clear ,thats what I did do.......i've since removed jre and jdk (pacman -Rd) and tried to re-install icedtea....the GCC complains about "file already exists" and the icedtea does'nt build for some reason.......and trying to remove icedtea results in package not found......

edit:

I had a look here
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR … NSUPPORTED
and if I read it correctly a Pacman -U on the package should work?

"this package can be installed using the upgrade command of pacman."
so
# cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
then
# pacman -U icedtea6-1.2-1.pkg.tar.gz

[root@desk pkg]# pacman -U icedtea6-1.2-1.pkg.tar.gz
loading package data...
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: icedtea6: requires gcc

Grrrrrrrr

I am new and want to learn :-)

Q1. How do I verify if gcc is infact installed or not as I believe to be the case.

Q2. I have tried to remove gcc (pacman -Rd gcc).....it says package not found

Q3. It looks like the *build* isnt working to me ,should i raise this as a bug and if so where?

Nice one..........I *forced* gcc as suggested and then did the same for icedtea6......I now have

[pete@desk ~]$ java -version
openjdk version "1.6.0-internal"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0-internal-b09)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.6.0-b09, mixed mode)
[pete@desk ~]$

I'll check for the browser plugin later ,work beckons.....thanks again.

Re: 64 bit Java plug-in is working with AUR packages!

You're welcome, glad it worked smile

I've updated the package on AUR to fetch with the new openjdk6 build (b10) from Sun, as wall as including some improvements made by Kite and a few cosmetic updates (desktop files and misc stuff). The binaries are currently being built and uploaded on the archlinuxfr repo (almost done for x86_64, should be done at the end of the afternoon for i686).
