Yes, I've also found that using osdcat/xosd is less than satisfactory for volume display because of the redraw issues like getting two images or more images on top of each other when changing volume rapidly. I have a ThinkPad so in my case tpb handles the volume display. It actually works correctly when you press the volume buttons multiple times. Perhaps if you use libxosd directly you getter better control of redrawing. Or perhaps tpb handles cleaning up the display when the OSD changes quickly. It might be worth a look at the tpb code to see what it is doing. If it can be done with libxosd directly (i.e., tpb isn't doing any special display handling) perhaps wrapping libxosd for whatever scripting language you're using might be doable. SWiG would probably make a pretty good wrapper for the library.

Not sure what exactly you are looking for but you can make a pretty good volume bar with dzen2. link

Hey artur, I used that katana wallpaper for a while, and I added a little scroll below the sword, for conky (fonts like "konfucious" are also a nice touch): http://sysphere.org/~anrxc/local/images/scroll.xcf

I think I have found A Good Window Manager: StumpWM.

Xmonad can! Stumpwm is good too. I used it for a while and really liked the hackability. It was just a bit too sluggish for my tastes though.
