Re: Looking for a Solid Laptop.

Be Careful with Thinkpad, They are no long IBM, and Lenovo has the worst customer Service ever. People don't even listen to you for your problem before they ask you to send the laptop in, they are don't really do anything. That is waste of time. As I hear, as experience myself. Though, the laptop's design are still good and above average, their have a huge quality control issue. Many Laptop have problem, some are big, and so little. Like the one I have is not a big deal, but it is very annoying. Don't think any one can work with their laptop with a high pitch noise for hours.  And with the newer model, the keyboard are no  long good as before. I mean it is lighter by like 25%, with is like only 2 OZ really, but now  you lost the amazing keyboard that IBM made. I don't think it is worth it. They energy seem to be much better. but, if the laptop lost it's quality, then don't really matter what the laptop can do. AS I say at the very beginning, Quality should go before Ability. I don't know about you, but to me it is. What good will a laptop do for you, if the keyboard is flex, and it is noisy, along with many other quality issue. Doesn't even matter it has like millions years of battery life, and up to 10GHz hex core. But at the end it only last like 2 days.

Re: Looking for a Solid Laptop.

Don't go for Acer Aspire.
I have a 5920g. the laptop works greate ,almost everything works out of the box.Just have an issue with the volume controller in Arch.
The volumecontroller(wheel) worked out of the box with ubuntu ,mandriva.
But the lid is easy to bend. Easy to get scratches from the keyboard on the screen i guess.
Wouldn't bought this laptop if I was alot on the move.

Re: Looking for a Solid Laptop.

I have a lenovo T400 and so far it's been up to my standards.  There have been a lot of reports of problems with the recent thinkpad but almost all of them are software (missing software drivers from the website...  both for vista and xp. Faulty rescue and recovery.)and personnel related.

The hardware is good though,  I have used (but not owned) dell xps, and macbooks and by far I prefer the T400's build quality and superior keyboard.  I don't have the noisy cd/dvd drive spin, the faulty battery, and the laptop isn't too hot that it can't be placed in your lap.

If you value the homerows of your keyboards like I do (conkeror, stumpwm, emacs, screen),  you have your trackpoint at the center of the action making less movements for using the mouse.  This is actually a good selling point for people who like keyboard driven environment but have to use the mouse for very specific purposes.

As for the keyboard, it's no ibm T40  but its not flimsy either.

If aesthetics matters, it may not be as sexy as the macbook pro but then black is always in. wink

Rule one: Don't use Vista wink

Can you buy a Thinkpad without Windows?

How about Dell? I have a 2 yr old Inspiron e1505 and I am very happy with it. No issues whatsoever.

Wow, no one recommends HP ? I have good experience with HP business laptops (6xxx series). Their Pavilion consumer line looks good too.

Re: Looking for a Solid Laptop.

Im running a Zepto machine. It is a reltively unknown brand, but they offer a few nice ones. You should be aware though, that the company has a reputation about it regarding it's support quality. Some customers have complained loudly about it. I have no bad experiences though, far from it, bit it should be mentioned.

Otherwise, i would go with either a Thinkpad or a HP.

Re: Looking for a Solid Laptop.

I used Acer: first time for 3 years (TM611) then TM803 (for 4 years), now moved to MSIGX700 where Linux supports all HW (lately even webcam)
