You have a r600 card. All you get at the moment is 2D acceleration (EXA), Video acceleration (XV) and power saving. They are currently working on 3D acceleration but i think this is no usable just now.
Here you can check the current progress with the radeon or radeonhd driver: http://wiki.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature
The difference between these two drivers is that radeonhd supports hdmi audio.

But if you need no 3D i recommend the radeon driver. Very stable and you can also turn on compositing with metacity.

If you really want to look at the experimental code for 3D acceleration: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17603

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Horror Story Of The Week - Getting Arch running on a laptop with two ATI cards

Getting X working on a laptop with ATI Hybrid Graphics has been an exercise in pain. 30+ hours later, it finally works. Mostly works - right now X won't start if the laptop is on battery power, even if fully charged.

First mistake was purchasing a Toshiba Satellite A355D-S6887. This abomination of nature has two graphics cards, a Radeon HD 3200 and a Radeon HD 3400. No option to turn one of the adapters off in the BIOS, therefore no hope of using the FOSS driver.  I take it home and try to install Arch, since that is what I run on my (non-ATI!) desktops: fail, after about 15 hours of work I finally gave up. I try openSUSE, thinking that YAST was idiot-proof: fail. Kubuntu: fail. Fedora: epic fail. Finally, just before I was about to chuck the laptop into the Han River, in an act of sheer desperation I tried Mandriva 2009.0: success! Amazingly, the live CD actually contained a version of fglrx compatible with the supplied kernel! I don't like Mandriva, since I'm used to having more control over my systems, but I at least had a working version of Linux on the laptop. At this point I had spent so much time on the laptop I was afraid I would soon be served with divorce papers so I left well enough alone for the time being.

Along comes Mandriva 2009.1 a few months ago. I upgrade, since I wanted KDE 4.2. Little did I know at the time that ATI hadn't a working catalyst driver compatible with 2.6.29, so after the "upgrade" I no longer had X. After some looking, I saw that catalyst 9.6 was out so back to Arch I go. After many, many false starts, brain farts and adding slowly to my rudimentary knowledge of X, and thanks to Kensai's catalyst repo and the hard work of him and many others on this board, I now have a somewhat workable machine running KDE. Xorg -configure won't work, so I rebooted the old Mandriva 2009.0 disk, copied the xorg.conf that the live CD generated onto the hard disk, and X worked just fine despite trying to load five or six nonexistent modules (I'll fix that later when I get enough energy to care about having 3D). Running aticonfig --initial on the transported xorg.conf didn't seem to do anything.

Again, thanks for all of your discussions here. They helped a lot.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Glad to here you got it working on Arch Linux. Well, after applying almost five hundred patches it does kind of work with kernel 2.6.30. Well, a lesson well learned, ATI sucks. So sad to know that support for kernel 2.6.30 will come on catalyst 9.9 or 9.10. I hope I'm wrong. But, oh well.

Which distros do they support: Suse and Ubuntu? I think their release dates are October and November. From then on there will be support for a new kernel. sad

spot on, I am giving the 9.9 possibility because they might include support for the beta or rc of ubuntu. But I think and hopefully will be support for kernel 2.6.31 which should be available then.

hopefully they won't do it the way they did with xorg 1.6 - give ubuntu a beta driver to support it for the release candidates and wait till that version of ubuntu was released to include it in thier driver releases....

i can't wait till 3d makes it into the open drivers....

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Last time I tried to use compositing on the radeon open source driver the results were less than impressive. Window dragging was slow in Xmonad with noticable pauses when tiling and floating windows. There have been a few updates, (kernel, radeon driver) since I last looked at it so I tried it today and it is much improved. I only use this machine on weekends and when traveling so it wasn't a priority. Not sure how it would go with prolonged use but it looks good to me so far. I still miss the power saving options though. smile

There are powersaving options:

Option      "ForceLowPowerMode"
Option       "DynamicPM"
Option       "ClockGating" "on"

check out man radeon.

Cool! I was only reading the man page today but my eyes must have skipped over these. I actually thought my laptop was running a bit quieter and cooler today than previously. Maybe these options are already on by default. I'll definitely check them out. Thanks.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Any improvement on i686 support?

Last time I tried (one week ago), i ended up with a frozen machine.

The worst  choice I could make was to get involved with kernel development and game development having an ATI card. I even wrote a script to fast switch between open source driver (while doing kernel development) and fglrx (while developing a game). Now, this isn't working anymore and I have to finish my game. Dammit

Just switch to x86_64 for catalyst (thanks for the repo). 3D soft like glxgear (8600 fps), nerverball works. But when i launch ETQW :

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

So, I installed kernel 2.6.28.10.

I tried to install catalyst / catalyst-utils with the current PKGBUILD disabling the patches and  changing the kernel version inside it. It didn't work. So I used the ugly and dirty way: installed directly with catalyst installer and it's working right now.

When I'm not using 3D, I simply uninstall catalyst and install radeonhd and boot into a newer kernel. I think I'll keep this configuration untill ATI provide a better driver... (I'm starting to think this configuration will survive for a long long time).

Is there any i686 catalyst package (I mean in http://dev.archlinux.org/~eduardo/repo/i686 repository e.g.) working with newest kernel in official repo? I didn't test anything because I must have working PC all the time in these days...

There is a i686 package supposed to work there, I did not build it myself, I just built the x86_64 ones. But if you rely heavily on uptime, I wouldn't recommend it, many people are experiencing problems with the latest catalyst drivers for i686.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Yes... I tried it, but it doesn't work for me. It is able run only fgl_glxgears.  My main reason to use this proprietary driver is because I'm working in a project with Ogre3D. Running  2.6.30 + catalyst all I get is a messy window displaying random colors. If I run fglrxinfo I get a frozen machine.

Thanks anyway

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

i686 ATi  in aur works. But glxgears/suspend/hibernation not working as intended. (a known problem). Even with xf86-video-Ati suspend/hibernation is not working with HD3450 / 2400 XT cards in the laptops. After installing catalyst from aur google-earth complains about the missing libgl so modules.

rolled back to open source driver (actually re-installed Arch in another HD) and now suspend (needs 70input-reset) / hibernate  works fine. This is for the records.

I have interest only in using ogre3d and this is not working.
