Hi.

Like (probably) many other people, I'm having problems with my keyboard on my Dell Latitude D600 notebook. In my xorg.conf, I removed all the InputDevice sections and also removed that from the serverlayout section. I created  a file in /etc/hal/fdi/policy to set my keyboard to "ch"  (Swiss German).

But when I press <up>, I still get a screenshot in Gnome mad I HAVE set "evdev-managed keyboard" in Gnome.

What else to try (besides disabling hotplugging)?

I tried using a new test user with no (non-default) settings. Using this  user, keyboard defaults to "Evdev-managed keyboard" in Gnome. But I still get a screenshot, when I press <up>.

PS: I have read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging, but it doesn't adress the problem that <up> creates snapshots in Gnome, if a evdev-managed keyboard is selected in Gnome.

"Nice" yikes So I am not the only one having problems, even after telling Gnome to treat the keyboard as being evdev managed.

Any alternative suggestions besides disabling hotplugging? I'd like to think I can get hotplugging and a functional keyboard.

I had the same problems - but I finally managed to solve it!

In "System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts" set the keyboard model to the generic 104 key then the generic 105 key, then back to Evdev managed. When I changed the model each time I typed some gibberish in gedit and tried to use the arrow keys.

I don't know how much of that was necessary or where the actual fix was, but those are the exact steps I took. It just seems like you need to tell it "no, really, set it to Evdev" a few times so that it knows you are serious smile

[edit]After restarting X it seems it's back to Up = Print Screen again! :-( [/edit]

I use the Danish version, so maybe the names aren't exact, but it ought to suffice:

Systemsettings -> Region & Language -> Keyboard Layout

There should be a 'keyboard model' selection box there where you can choose evdev managed keyboard. FWIW, I had trouble spotting it in the selection myself, until I clicked 'e' in the list until finally the evdev layout appeared.

Sounds like gnome, no? Actually, changing it in KDE4 was a bit quirky for as well (had to add another language for the command string to actually change to evdev) but this is a problem after having changed to evdev managed keyboard. It was even worse before that.

I just switched my mouse and keyboard (GB) to hotplugging by following the wiki - seem to work fine but how do i change the key delay/repeat rate now?
I used to have:  Option "AutoRepeat" "220 45"   in the keyboard InputDevice section of xorg.conf . I tried 'xset r rate' but it doesn't have any effect.

when xorg hit testing a copule of months ago i had a swath of these problems. a reinstall of gnome pacman -S gnome because of a group handling bug in pacman was needed as well as deleting all gnome configs ~/.gnome* (and perhaps somestuff under ~/.config)

Does anyone know if this GNOME preference setting (evdev) is related to simply a gnome gui for making this setting, the window manager (metacity/compiz/?) or some running process?

Speaking as an openbox/no-DE user with a lot of GNOME stuff installed (but alas no 'keyboard' item in 'Preferences')....

I use Gnome and I had the same problem with the <up> key working as Print Screen, but I fixed today.

- I deleted 10-keymap.fdi in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/
- Restored mi xorg.conf before the upgrade (deleting the RGB Path)
- Selected the correct layout in System -> Preferences -> Keyboard: Evdev-managed keyboard and the Spanish distribution.

I restarted hal and X and fixed for me smile I hope can help you.  EDIT: Doesn't work!

EDIT: I don't know why or when, but the problem came back to me, even without reboot X or hal...

And I can't make work the middle buttom on mi touchpad touching in the upper right corner, like before the upgrade. This is my /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics.fdi

Those who are having problems with the Up arrow key invoking screen capture, do you have .Xmodmap in your home dir? I removed that and up arrow key works as expected, however multimedia keys on my laptop dont work.

If I go to keyboard shortcuts in Gnome and set them to how they should be they work but after a reboot it's back to square one again, anyone know where the settings will be kept and why the f**k it keeps forgetting them.

Apologies for my language but this has become irritating to the point where Ubuntu looks a realistic switch till this is fixed.

I got a troubleshoot for the annoying up arrow key screenshooter:

After we had put:
System -> Preferences -> Keyboard: Evdev-managed keyboard

edit your file /etc/hal/fdi/policy/12-keymap.fdi

in the line:

 
       <match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name" string="Linux">
        <merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">evdev</merge>
      </match>

change evdev to pc105 and restart (hal)

Try this, was fine for me

PS, I'm cannot get working the synaptics touchpad 'click on touch', i already get the two fingers scroll, but no more, need some help

EDIT: Not work all the times, I'm in XFCE and only survives to restart if the keyboard layout plugin, manage layout is in 'globally', not works in 'per application' or 'per window' sad

To me it's working that solution for now. I hope this is permanent. Thanks for posting it!

And I solved the problem with the synaptics middle button. It solved adding this line:

<merge key="input.x11_options.RTCornerButton" type="string">2</merge>

in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics.fdi

Hi all,
I will add to the confusion.
As mentioned in the wiki, this is an upstream bug, but somehow the link only points to the openbox issue. It seems there is also a deeper problem in xorg regarding the setting up of the keyboard, in particular when no login manager or autologin is used. Check this bug out at gentoo:

There is a patch, and hopefully the dev will think about including this patch, because it has been reported to work (is Jan de Groot listening?).

I, at last, put the hotplugging off. guess this stuff is a bit lazy, and no gets significant improvements for me, let this thing get a little time to mature
