Re: Midori rocks

For those of you, who are interested, there's a new interesting browser in the AUR => http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=26756 I'll definitely give it a try, vimperator without firefox and with webkit could be awesome! big_smile

Re: Midori rocks

I also don't have accels file, Intrepid. Using midori-git 20090526-1 (built yesterday) - maybe it's been deprecated as you say.
I wanted to ask someone to try and open www.anidb.net - it's a website I use a lot, and can't seem to have midori to display it correctly - and report back.
Thanks.

Looks good, definitely worth a try.
And worth a thread of its own. wink tongue

This has been written with this new "WebKit Browser". At least it is useable for Arch Forum.

Not working with epiphany & uzbl . So It's either a Webkit limitation or the site has no valid HTML code .

Re: Midori rocks

I've just installed Midori and it's unbelieveably good. The only thing not working(and making me keep Epiphany) for me is the java plugin.

Most likely it's the webserver that isn't configured properly and is sending the wrong mimetype or no mimetype at all.

The solved URL appears to refer to a pearl script: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=main. Could this be the cause?

Does anyone know what the difference is between the webkitbrowser-git package above and the vimpression-git package?

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=26811

Looks like an interesting project. I will be interested to compare it with the uzbl browser:

Actually, looks like I was wrong about the mimetypes. What is happening is that the server responds with a gzip encoded page, even if the client requesting the page doesn't specify that it supports it. Webkit currently doesn't, afaik.

vimpression is the rewrite branch of webkitbrowser. in other words, the author of "webkitbrowser" is rewriting his browser, and it's called vimpression. the rewrite branch has essential features missing, like the highlight links(because of a bug in webkit).

I came to the same conclusion as you did. Maybe this will give some insight: http://www.twintechs.com/blog/?p=103

"links" or "elinks" maybe?

Re: Midori rocks

Midori needs a bit more work before it has enough features to replace Firefox. I've used it for a good amount of time and I am impressed.

Re: Midori rocks

No webkit browser is lighter on my workstation than Firefox (3.0.11 from the repos). It is always using about the same resources. Interestingly, from a non-scientific perspective, it's not even on average faster than Firefox; it usually balances out. On top of that, webkit has lots of problems and is far from being were gecko is. It can't even render DejaVu Sans or Bitstream Vera properly (note: they blame Cairo. Maybe they should copy Firefox instead).

What am I trying to say? This sucks! I want uzbl to be able to fully replace Firefox for me. It's fun and has a crazy name.

Re: Midori rocks

@s3kt0r anidb.net does not work and it shows a bunch of junk, again, probably a webkit limitation; it works in epiphany xulrunner.  As far as lightweight browsers go, of all the fully-featured browsers, Midori and Kazehakase have the least strain on my memory resources.

Re: Midori rocks

@sektor and all who have requested it:  midori-git now has a Keyboard Shortcut Editor!  Although I do not think it works as of the git version.  Yet the author listens to our feedback, and it just gets better and better!

I agree. Webkit is very slow for me, with huge pauses of several seconds for no reason that I can determine. uzbl suffers from it even more than midori. Midori uses the same amount of memory as Firefox for me (uzbl is quite a bit smaller).
