Re: [Solved] Browser randomly crashes with flash sites?

I am not sure if this really is a 64-bit only problem. I have

firefox 3.0.7-1
flashplugin 10.0.22.87-1
jre 6u11-1

in an x86 system (NVidia Geforce 8400 GS based) and http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer works without any problems here.
This "success" could be caused by some interfering firefox plugin, whereof come to my mind (installed here):

Adblock Plus 1.0.1
NoScript 1.9.1

Another possibility (see the BBC link cause above) could be the cookies regime which I set to "ask every time" ("jedes Mal nachfragen" in German). If this is set otherwise, cookies will probably fill up unseen until firefox blocks. (Is there any log which could prove this?)

And yet another possibility. I have an almost complete set of lib32* packages set up here. Perhaps parts of firefox rely on the presence of some of these.

I just installed NoScript which unfortunately did not solve my problems. It will disable flash perfectly but then I have no flash. If I set it to not disable flash, then it crashes as normal. Have not tried adblock yet, will try later plus the cookie setting.

Re: [Solved] Browser randomly crashes with flash sites?

I just have a few small questions. Has anyone still having problems tried multiple flash plugins in an attempt to get flash working?  Second question, did you purge them and make sure no files were left behind?

I tried the 2 flash alternatives mentioned earlier in this thread but did not get them to work properly. I probably need to spend more time trying them. I did remove flashplugin by pacman-R flashplugin. Not sure where to remove the other files?

Re: [Solved] Browser randomly crashes with flash sites?

I have pure 64-bit and Flash has NEVER crashed on a Flash site with me using 64-bit Flash. There IS some stuff that doesn't work yet, but it has never crashed. Oh, and I don't have the Firefox plugins mentioned above. I only have FireFTP, Firebug and something to store bookmarks (Foxmark).

I know that don't help you guys with problems, but I just wanted to let people know that it does work. I've no idea what the difference may be.

Oh, I have the nVidia 8400GS card as well (if that matters).

OK this rules firefox plugins out, IMO.
Now what about lib32*?
Any pattern in video card dependency? nVidia 8400GS obviously works. But this is a rather simple model.

Re: [Solved] Browser randomly crashes with flash sites?

If it is just to block flash use flashblock and allow it to play just what you really want (hit the play button on top of the flash video you want to play).
Anyway your problem is a strange one, more and more people are using 64bit these days and no major reports about any problems .... like it was said before it makes me think the problem may be in the graphics driver or something related. Maybe you could use xf86-video-vga or xf86-video-vesa just to rule that out. It will look terrible and there is no acceleration as far as I know so if it still doesn't work the problem would be somewhere else.
Also as videos are composed of audio + video maybe you should try to rule out the sound system too, maybe a new bug in alsa (if you are using it) could be causing this.

I was thinking it could be related to the ati drivers, but I just tried using the vesa drivers and it did the same thing. I am using alsa so might try to disable that next.
Edit: disabled alsa (!alsa) in daemons which did not change anything.

Re: [Solved] Browser randomly crashes with flash sites?

Until we can figure out a solution, what about fixing this by simply setting up a 32-bit firefox, flash, etc using chroot??  hmm

This way my internet setup would be 32-bit and should work without any issues right? I would also be able to run wine like i need to.

What CPUs are the people who get crashes using?
There is this bug in flash: http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-1026

I switched back to 32-bit flash with nspluginwrapper on my laptop because it was affected by that bug.

Seems like quite a lot of ppl are having this flash issue! Looks like both AMD and Intel are affected. This laptop I am running on now is an Intel:

Hmmm may be indeed an hardware bug .... if I have time I will try to install Arch64 in my desktop with and Athlon64 3000+ (venice core), if indeed there is a bug then I guess it will be affected.

Re: [Solved] Browser randomly crashes with flash sites?

Hi,

This seems to be an error in flash itself. The upstream (adobe) forum can be found here:

http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-1026

I strongly encourage people who have this problem to make some noise and post to the thread.

Include the output of 'uname -a', 'cat /proc/cpuinfo', and for bonus points, the output of running 'gdb firefox' (then hit run/enter)

Example:

uname -a
Linux korbin 2.6.28-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Mar 8 10:55:58 CET 2009 x86_64 Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.20GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

and the trace;

gdb firefox
(gdb) run
...<enter...enter>

Navigate to a page that crashes (for me: http://www.google.com/finance/ and click on the flash chart)

Pick up everything immediately following the crash:

Re: [Solved] Browser randomly crashes with flash sites?

I was experiencing this problem very frequently on a 64-bit installation of Ubuntu, but I installed Arch a few weeks ago with the same packages as everyone above has mentioned and have not had this problem since.  On ubuntu, I seemed to be able to make the problem go away by killing all my java processes before I went to any site that used flash.  I'm not sure if that'd be helpful here or not.

Re: [Solved] Browser randomly crashes with flash sites?

I know on some sites the flash 10 plugin has issues. A few days ago I had to remove it and replace it with the older 32bit version and nspluginwrapper on my brothers computer as he plays a lot of games on yahoo and they caused the browser to crash. This is a trade off tho because the flash 9 has other issues like menu's that get hidden behind things.

Looks like it is a sse3 problem to me. I'm surprised you guys haven't tried another browser.

Tried swiftweasel and midori, same results.

Re: [Solved] Browser randomly crashes with flash sites?

Using firefox, flashplugin, ati & the opensource ati drivers I get the same problem.  Only site that it crashes on a lot is adultswim.com/video, but it'll still randomly crash on other sites.

Aside from that, Apple's trailer site also crashes my browser, and I think it uses the mplayer plugin.

Definitely a flash problem. I am using arch x86_64, firefox 3.0.8 and i have the same problem with some flash video sites. I tried it with Midori and Epiphany. Exactly the same thing: illegal operation message. Seems to be a flash problem afterall.

Thank you for this post, it leads me to believe that you do have some files left over from failed installs because swiftweasel shares no files with firefox, not even its settings. But it does use the mozilla plugin folder. What files are in the following locations.
~/.mozilla/plugins/
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

I dont have a ~/.mozilla/plugins directory, but I do have the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 9.2M 2009-02-25 04:43 libflashplayer.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    35 2009-03-06 22:59 libnpjp2.so -> /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.s

Perhaps I was wrong. The directory has no other plugins.

Guess there is no one with a fix for this yet. roll

Surprised a serious bug like this has no resolution from Adobe yet?
