AHCI is a newer disk interface that enables some more advanced sata(2) stuff , it should be faster and use more features of modern controllers/drives.
i wonder what the problem is here though, it would be interesting to see what happens if you add ahci to the modules="" line of your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, rebuild the initramfs and then enable AHCI in your bios..

I use AHCI and to work it's need a sd_mod module .
