The inittab line won't help with this stability issue.  I believe it will prevent your gnome from spawning on tty2.

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

insanemal's suggestion is that it may be caused by the getty respawning on tty2 and kicking gnome off, which is why I am giving it a shot.  This happened a few months ago too and there were a couple of threads and a bug report about it then.

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

Good to know I'm not the only one having this problem.

I had no problems with the earlier version of GNOME. This release has been very buggy on both my laptop and netbook.

Main Computer: Acer Aspire 5570z dual booting Arch Linux and Windows XP
Netbook: Asus eeePC 901 with Arch Linux
Project: Apple iBook G4 (needs a new hard drive, RAM, and a fresh install of Ubuntu PPC)

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

@Igolebio, check to see if your GDM is spawning on tty2.  If so, that may be the cause.

I have met this problem too.
The common thing is that I pressed key '2' or '@' before the X crashed each time.

Funny thing, even if I comment the line in /etc/inittab....

#c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty2 linux

...after reboot gnome still runs in tty2. WTF ?

I've been running 2.28 for several days without issues.

Maybe someone could show Xorg logs?

Interesting... I too just experienced the crash and I was typing a list with numbers 1-4 in it.  Guess what, it crashed as I typed #2!

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

Well, one can downgrade back to the older gdm package and everything seems to work!  (Credit to overlord_manny in this thread - see post #51).

Get it from the following repo:
(x64_86) - http://www.schlunix.org/archlinux/extra … pkg.tar.gz
(i686) - http://www.schlunix.org/archlinux/extra … pkg.tar.gz

# pacman -U gdm-2.20.10-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz

You can now use gdmsetup to configure it as before.

Also, add the following to /etc/pacman.conf to ignore it until it gets fixed

IgnorePkg   = gdm

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

This is a longshot, and I'm not an expert but your X might be loading alternate drivers which are buggy or incompatible with the new GDM. From the errors common to the two posts above I'd try the following.

Add the following line under the "ServerLayout" section in your xorg.conf file.

Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false"

If the section does not exist, add it like so:

Section "ServerLayout"
        Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false"
EndSection

If you don't have a xorg.conf file, You can create it with "sudo X -configure".
If you get an error about the display being in use, use "sudo X -configure :1".

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

@shauros - thanks but adding the line hosed my keyboard's ability to repeat when I hold down a key.  I don't think the problem is a function of Xorg actually.  I believe it's with Gnome since it didn't start happening until the 2.28 packages got installed.

Same game here: sometimes, hitting the key "2" in a fast sequence after some other key makes X restart.

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

Actually, it seems (in my case) that this problem did NOT start after upgrade to Gnome 2.28, but right after upgrading to xorg-server 1.7.0.901-1 packages from testing. I've tried to downgrade Xorg to the stable version and everything looks fine even with gdm 2.28.

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

Another same crash for me i was upgrading aur packages and the shell gives me this output:
./configure: fork: retry: Resource temporarily unavailable
/bin/sh fork: retry: Resource temporarily unavailable
and then it crashes and i had to kill the system from the power botton, now i try to downgrade xorgserver to the extra version, i've disabled testing repo

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

This has been happening to me too. I have notice the following after the last crash:
- GDM has been spawning on TTY2.
- When it crashed, GDM spawned on TTY7.
- If you check TTY2 you can see a bunch of failed login attempts which are probably the result of your random keystrokes.

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

Ok, at this point we should ask:
Of the people who experience crashes,
1) Anyone not running GDM on tty2? If so, on which tty?
2) Anyone not using the xorg version from the testing repository?

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

i dont't remember exactly, but when i've upgraded my gnome to 2.28, pacman ask me if I want it to replace GDM with (i don't remember the name he!) but the thing is that I did it, and i haven't experience any problem!

perhaps a new actualization gave you the chances of upgrading/replace gdm?

greetings

Re: Gnome 2.28 occasionally crashes back to gdm login screen!

@Shauros,

1)  I have not experienced any crashes since commenting out the line in inittab (see above) and mine is running on tty2.
2)  I am not using the xorg version from testing (not using anything from testing in fact)..
