Re: What's the one thing you hate about Gnu/Linux?

I hate how you have to NOT pay for software, that sucks.

Actually, under the GPL, there is no restriction as to whether you can or cannot charge a fee for your services.  However, due to the open distribution factor, it tends to mean that they are really just paying for support.  See Red Hat for example.

Even though that's true, I hope that was sarcastic. tongue

I'd also like to add "Users who think they are better than Windows users just because they use Linux". To each his own.

And it's really not exclusive to Linux.

Also I don't really hate anything in Linux, it works for me.
So only thing that I can't tolerate is Linux fanaticism of some users. To each his or her own, even if that's Windows or Mac and not Linux.
But as i said it's not exclusive to just Linux.

I'm fed up with this.

As a developer I can sum this up in one word:

Users.

On the other hand, they can be one of the best things, but it only takes a few really annoying ones to make you want to pull your hair out, assuming you have not already done so.

Re: What's the one thing you hate about Gnu/Linux?

And as a user:

Developers smile

Yes, they make the stuff they use, without them users would be be nowhere.  But a loud miniority are very snobby, and make bug reporting / etc. very painful.
They don't have to care about users' problems, since those users didn't buy anything, but some seem to think that excludes them from being decent and kind, especially when the user genuinely wants to help.
And it is freaking frustrating when a piece of software is just perfect, except for one teensy thing, which the developer gets all in an uproar when you request respectfully, or shuts you down coldly.
Of course, that does lead to more developers.

Just pointing out there are two sides smile

Re: What's the one thing you hate about Gnu/Linux?

Dare I say Linux? While the Linux kernel has amazing support for a variety of hardware, I don't think the way Linux is being developed right now is the future. The way MINIX is designed is way better, and far more versatile. MINIX probably would get bloated to if it was so actively developed as Linux but still. I think I am on Tanenbaums side.

From this to going nowhere to really useless to dead.

Fortunately, Ranguvar had a very astute point to make just a few posts above, so the thread can rest in peace.
