I noticed earlier this morning faad2 or faac quit being an MPD dependency on my server, despite still being needed by MPD. Do an
ldd /usr/bin/mpd|grep found
If you see libfaa{c,d} or any other lib, please open a bug on flyspray. Strangely enough on my laptop all MPD dependencies are met (faac and faad2 are both listed as dependencies):
[stijn@hermes ~]$ ldd /usr/bin/mpd|grep -E "not|faa"
libfaad.so.2 => /usr/lib/libfaad.so.2 (0xb76ab000)
libfaac.so.0 => /usr/lib/libfaac.so.0 (0xb5af2000)
I have a 0.15.10-2 package btw, not -1.

That means all dependencies are satisfied. Try starting the binary directly, so without using the script, and see if it spits out anything. MPD should do some logging too if you set it up correctly.

i started it with mpd --verbose --no-daemon and tried it.
it seg faulted when i tried to update the db.
error log doesnt say anything.

Just to be sure: you did a full system update, not a selective one?
If after an -Syu mpd still segfaults then I'm afraid that's out of my league.

yeah full system update.
the only thing that i have in IgnoredPkgs is awesome but that shouldnt have any effect on mpd.

My system is full up to date too, and I hadn't any problem with mpd & ncmpcpp

I had the same problem. It has to do with the ffmpeg upgrade to version 23792. Mpd uses other decoders for mp3 or ogg, so it depends on your playlist if you get the segfault or not. However, downgrading ffmpeg solves the problem for now.
This affects mpd-git as well, but there you get an assertion fail instead of a segfault.

Thanks, laochailan!
Could someone check whether this issue exists with ffmpeg-svn? I tried to but I entered dependency hell

why not? ffmpeg from extra IS a svn snapshot. when using ffmpeg-svn you'll only get couples of revisions more.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Because it works with 23619 and does not with 23792 so it's hard to guess what with latest snapshot.

i reinstalled mpd but still get the same issue.

Same here. Rebuilding mpd or building ffmpeg from svn did not make a difference. Downgraded ffmpeg for now. Should I open a bug against mpd or ffmpeg? Or any other ideas what exactly is causing this?

i guess is a bug in mpd and needs to be reported upstream. in the report explain that you got ffmpeg from svn latest revision and that faad support was removed from ffmpeg

I also have this issue. Well, I can play music but I get a connection refused after I try to update my library.
I tried to rebuild x264 ffmpeg and mpd from ABS in this order, to no avail.
mpd-git doesn't work either.

edit: after some testing, the offending commit should be ffmpeg-23703. arch's package system is just briliant - create folder, check out svn revision, rename to src/package, adjust PKGBUILD, makepkg -e, repeat. quite elegant...

thanks a lot of investigating. for now i'll downgrade ffmpeg to the latest version that worked in our repos

The new ffmpeg update solved it for me.

you mean the downgrade thanks wonder.

No, the repos were updated and with the new ffmpeg mpd works. Unless of course the repos themselves downgraded ffmpeg.
