Brightness keys not working...

I'm running (of courser Arch) xfce4 in a Dell XPS 15. I have a problem, from the very beginning, that the brightness keys doesn't work... except after resume from suspending the system. I realised that when I close the lid and the computer suspends and I open it back the keys work. Also the fans start up to maximum speed and I have to manually stop them with i8kfan.

It's been more than a year with this issue but never did managed to fix it, but I really wan to fix it. I'm not sure which logs to include here because in the research that I did didn't find anything interesting,

Deos anyone have any clue how can I fix it?

Re: Brightness keys not working...

Is this an optimus system? If so, how did you configure the graphics stack?

Re: Brightness keys not working...

You mean if I have installed Optimus Manager? Then yes, but it happen even before install it.
In any case, the configuration that I have of Optimus Manager is:

$ cat optimus-manager.conf
[intel]
DRI=3
accel=
driver=modesetting
modeset=yes
tearfree=

[nvidia]
DPI=96
PAT=yes
allow_external_gpus=no
ignore_abi=no
modeset=yes
options=overclocking

[optimus]
auto_logout=yes
pci_power_control=yes
pci_remove=yes
pci_reset=function_level
startup_auto_battery_mode=intel
startup_auto_extpower_mode=nvidia
startup_mode=intel
switching=acpi_call

Re: Brightness keys not working...

No, I meant which approach you're following reg. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA_Optimus

Either way

startup_auto_extpower_mode=nvidia

might start on the nvidia chip.
Post an xorg log from when backlight control doesn't work, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Re: Brightness keys not working...

Sorry for the delay... I'm using the the optimus-manager to only use the intel integrated GPU. Is the only way I managed to really switch off the Nvidia card. All other options removed the nvidia kernel modules but the card was still eating battery.

The outout of xorg log is:

Re: Brightness keys not working...

Please post the entire log - the grep doesn't really contain anything of relevance.
(The example in the blue box is to help to check the logs timestamp only, which in your case is up-to-date)

Re: Brightness keys not working...

There seems to be only one GPU, the intel one - and the internal display is wired there.
Did you add the "acpi_backlight=native" as a mitigation effort?

Re: Brightness keys not working...

Yes I had in my grub configuration:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 acpi_rev_override=1 acpi_backlight=native acpi_osi=Linux nouveau.modeset=0 nouveau.runpm=0 disable_power_well=0 mem_sleep_default=deep"

But know I tried all the options, I just tried again to only have:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 nouveau.modeset=0 nouveau.runpm=0"

and the Xorg.0.log is now

$ cat Xorg.0.log

I've also tried all the possibilities for acpi_backlight (=video,vendor,native) with no further success. The problem remains the same. When I suspend the system and the reload it back, then the keys start to work properly. What I don't know is how to keep track of what is changing in the configuration when I suspend and weak it up... I'm not sure if it has to do with the Optimus Manager, or the XFCE screen saver, or XFCE power managment, or TLP... I'm pretty lost.

Re: Brightness keys not working...

I'm not sure if it has to do with the Optimus Manager

Can you control the backlight in software, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Backlight - ie. is this maybe an issue w/ the keyboard rather than the backlight?

Ceterum censeo: do you have a parallel windows installation? See the 3rd link below.

I have indeed a nvidia GPU, but I want it fully disable because otherwise consumes a lot of power. The only way I managed to fully disable it was with Optimus Manager and with switching method ACPI call.

Thanks for the link. I'll read it in detail, seems it might be useful to understand how the backlight works. I'll check if it's and issue of the keyboard but doesn't look like. The strange thing is that after resuming from suspend mode it actually works perfectly...

I don't have windows installation, I do have a Debian installation in parallel (there I have KDE and everything works fine).

Perhaps to mention that I can also adjust the brightness with the xfce Power Manager brightness level bar anytime.

Re: Brightness keys not working...

Just make sure that debin isn't hibernating but you shut down and powered off from there (the problem exists for any kind of parallel OS)

Re: Brightness keys not working...

You mean to check that Debian is properly shut down? Yes, it is properly shut down.

Re: Brightness keys not working...

I would like to revive this post since it's been four years with my archlinux installation and the backlight keys still don't work until I suspend or hibernate. Then they work. Why?

Before suspending/hibernating the backlight works with

light -A/-U

.

Re: Brightness keys not working...

Do at any point (before or after the suspend) the keys generate input in "evtest" or "libinput debug-events" or "xev -event keyboard"? And which?

Re: Brightness keys not working...

Good question. No, they don't work before suspending. I've tried xev. Another thing that happens after suspending/hibernating is that the fans speed up to max speed and I have to switch them off with

i8kfan 0 0

Then they work good, as the brightness keys do.

Perhaps I could add that I'm using optimus-manager, with default I use only integrated GPU. Actually I like to have completely disable my Nvidia dedicated one, a barely use it.

Do they after the S3?
Make sure to not only check xev, evtest, libinput debug-events and xev look at different layers of the input, evtest is the closest to the kernel and should be the first address to see whether they keys are handled by the OS at all.
