Re: shutdown Harddisk [SOLVED]

You're absolutely sure it's never done that before?

My laptop also makes a clapping sound when it shuts down, although it's probably less noisy than yours because it doesn't scare me at all.

I am running the beyond kernel, maybe you could give that one a try. It's got a lot of handy patches for laptops like Suspend2, IBM specific stuff, ...

Re: shutdown Harddisk [SOLVED]

If it makes you feel better, both my laptop and my desktop make a loud click (or clap if you will) when they shut down.  And with 5 drives in my desktop, thats a beast of a click...

Add a subwoofer and you've got yourself a surround click!

Re: shutdown Harddisk [SOLVED]

Your harddrive "claping" when shutting down is due to the reader pin being slammed in off position. the reason you might not hear it in some other distros is due to advanced power management (APM/ACPI) fanciness implented ootb in fancier dists.
Allthough i'ts nothing at all to worry about, perfectly normal.

I never said anything about that.
