Re: linux-6.8.1 maybe has some problems

1. please put your output in code brackets
2. did you listen to the warning and ran grub-install and grub-mkconfig after the update?

Can you describe the error? "I couldn't enter the system" is quite vague

I'm sorry for the format of output.

I didn't run grub-install and grub-mkconfig before restart . but i did it in the live usb ,it doesn't work.

I could enter the grub, but i can't enter the archlinux's login screen. It just black screen.

Re: linux-6.8.1 maybe has some problems

Do you have an nvidia GPU and are using an older version of nvidia-dkms?
You most likely can still boot the multi-user.target (2nd link below) in doubt along "nomodeset".

If it's not nvidia, boot to the black screen™, reboot using ctrl+alt+del (frenetically), boot the multi-user.target and post the system journal for the failing boot from there.

sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

My pc is nuc11(no nvidia GPU) and i use archlinux + hyprland without display managers. I login hyprland always by tty manually.

I tested several times and ran the grub command. The problem is same: when i upgrade to linux-6.8.1, then reboot pc. I can enter  grub, but can't start archlinux, just black screen without any err info.
I tried to set the default.target to multi-user.target and tried to use ctrl +alt+del. seems doesn't work just reboot again. Now i have downgraded to linux-6.7.9 and continue to use it.

seems doesn't work just reboot again

That's the point - post the journal of a 6.8 boot (increase the -b -<n> digit to go back in time)

You're not getting output on the multi-user.target, but w/ "nomodeset"?
Try to add

i915.enable_psr=0 i915.enable_fbc=0 initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init

to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters

yes, i tried the "nomodeset" , it worked ,i can login into my system by tty,of cause the Hyprland crashed when i start it sad

Re: linux-6.8.1 maybe has some problems

"i915.enable_dc=0"?
(But this is just poking around)

From the journal I guess you already tried to switch the VT when ending at a black acreen?

Re: linux-6.8.1 maybe has some problems

Can you try to blindly login and "startx" (rather than wayland, but you can try hyprland first, if you want)?

The other parameters are still in place and most importantly there's no simpledrm device?
(For context: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/10133 )

Also: how's the output connected? HDMI? DP? Some adapter?
Tried to re-plug it after the boot?

I don't install the xorg-xinit,  so the command not found.

I thought this will not work. Guess what? It worked. I re-plug the HDMI when it is black screen, then i can see the login screen and the linux version is 6.8.1.
Now i can remain the upgrade although i should re-plug the HDMI when i reboot or startup pc everytime.
Good news is that i always keep pc on and i'm not need to downgrade it for i can start the DE.

Thank you so much for replies.

Re: linux-6.8.1 maybe has some problems

So the HDCP handshake fails (it's designed for that, so no big surprise roll)
Do you have another HDMI cable? Are there any adapters involved?
And most importantly: does the simpledrm device still show up in your journal?

Re: linux-6.8.1 maybe has some problems

Ok, my best working theory becomes then that

Mar 20 09:41:10 Arch kernel: ------------[ cut here ]------------
Mar 20 09:41:10 Arch kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: drm_WARN_ON(!connector->dp.dsc_decompression_aux || !connector->dp.dsc_decompression_enabled)
Mar 20 09:41:10 Arch kernel: WARNING: CPU: 4 PID: 147 at drivers/gpu/drm/i915/display/intel_dp.c:3193 intel_dp_sink_disable_decompression+0x63/0xf0 [i915]

stalls the exectution so much that you run into the HDCP timeout (which basically doesn't allow for the transmit of one additional package)
The warning/condition is addressed and will go away w/ one of the next kernel updates when your monitor hopefully just return to normal function.

You could resort to the LTS kernel for the time being.

Re: linux-6.8.1 maybe has some problems

I had the same problem as the OP and the patch in https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm-intel/ … bea5b8ddb5 indeed fixes the issue for me. Would obviously love a backport...
