Mouse DPI

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has information on how mouse DPI works?

I bought a Chinese mouse with a DPI switch on top yet the switch does nothing.

I would have assumed that the DPI switch would have changed some settings inside the mouse but I am wondering if there is a possibility that the resolution of the mouse by fixed and that the DPI button is just a standard button that tells the desktop environment to change the speed of the mouse?  If so could the DPI button be mapped as a 3rd button mouse?  How could I see what DPI I am running and how to change it?

I am using the LXQT desktop with XWindows ( for now, maybe Wayland soon ).  Any info or links on what exactly the physical DPI switch on a generic mouse is suppose to work would be appreciated.
